Indeed. Very much worth funding youngsters to have free access to such experiences imo.

But you're seeing it all wrong. It would have meant millions of non-English youngsters flooding into the country never to leave again and costing us more money in taxes than we have. We should be so thankful for Nige and co for saving us from this hair-brained scheme.

That seems to be the direction of travel. I guess one good thing to come out of this US administration is making a lot of people in the UK realise how important European coordination and relationships are. Which is ironic given they were pro Farage/Brexit. He’s pushed us closer to Europe in the same way Putin has pushed Eastern Europe and the nordics towards NATO. Starmer should be braver on EU ties (which in fairness he’s worked towards) but I’d say he almost certainly has popular backing for doing so now.

I did it in the early 80s when Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia were communist. And I travelled overnight between places rather than wasting the day travelling, paying only about £1 for a couchette, much cheaper than staying in a hotel. One memory was eating in a restaurant in Romania which was situated in a building once owned by Vlad Dracul's father, as well as visiting the castle which was reputed to be the home of Vlad Dracul and finding the people there wished to play down the connection because, unlike in Britain where it would have been publicised and monetised to the hilt, they thought it reflected badly on the country. I thought we were giving people £10k each when they arrived from France? To travel Back home through Europe? Surely that’s far more generous.? [Post edited 10 Apr 9:14]

With Reform polling at 25% I wish I shared your confidence that there was "a lot" of people realising this. I fear there are still far more gullible thickos out there than there are people who reasonably informed on such matters.

Maybe I’m over optimistic but 25pc of the voting population is still a minority of people. Maybe I’m naive to the danger of Reform, but I just don’t see them getting anywhere near a majority. They won’t be getting any votes from Norfolk now at least…

Given that Labour got a massive majority with only 33% of the vote, I am not convinced that anything is now off table especially given the emergence of the Greens, who are polling ahead of Labour. For what it's worth, my feeling at present is that Reform and the Tories will get enough seats to form a government, and with there being little difference between the two parties given the rightward drift under Badenoch, such a government will not be much different from a Reform government.
