Up against Dozzell and Marlon Pack should be way more dominant.

Agreed.

"I don't want to be like everyone else. That's why I'm a mod, see?"

Neil and Nunez have both been passengers - we have been wasteful and frankly been the 2nd best throughout - back to slow passing from the back, trying to play wide when no space rather than some one driving through the middle we playing to the wing where again there is no space - it’s like Charlton game where they have turned up and expected to win without putting any effort in.

Weird because his first couple of games he looked like Luongo, driving the ball forward through midfield.

Then he just stopped doing it...

In his interview weeks back he said he was going through coaching to play a different way.

This game says he wont be staying with Ipswich when lian is up.

We then finished with Akpom in there.
What has happened to him? He is stealing a living. Does anyone know what the view of him at Ajax was?
But, yes Dan Neil is not the answer. Taylor should be ahead of him at the moment.

I don't think they felt he was without hope, he did okay there without setting the world alight

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

This isn’t a new issue though. Our midfield hasn’t dominated all season. Pretty much all of our good stuff has come from the flanks ( predominantly the left side too).

As good as Matusiwa is, his best work is out of possession. That’s why we need someone with a bit of creative spark alongside him, because on the ball in midfield, we’re not good enough. We never sustain pressure through the middle, we don’t control games from there and we certainly don’t create or score enough goals from there.

We went in all in Hackney and it's very obvious why.

It did? I didn't realise it was there in the first place! One good thing to take from tonight. Surely can't be as bad again?

This is the crux of the issue, we've had 5 central midfielders and all pairings have some sort of fallibility. If we assume the base rate is Matusiwa + 1 other, then he should be paired with an all action midfielder who can drive the ball forward. Cajuste can drive forward but can't cover the ground. Taylor can cover the ground but is limited technically. Neil hasn't shown the ability to do either in any sustained sense and Nunez has been pushed further forward - even then I don't think anyone is arguing pulling Nunez back into a midfield 2 is the solution.

It does show how difficult it is to find that Luongo-esque player. Central midfield is a hard one as it's probably the area of the pitch where different players are going to have wildly different skillsets and like for like replacements are tough. We just haven't got it right this season. Closest we've got is Matusiwa - Taylor, which gives control but not guile or creation.

The lack of midfield driving forward with the ball last night was infuriating…made worse by seeing O’Shea do it twice to great effect in the second half and getting us on the front foot.

Maybe this is why Jens has been binned off as he’s too forward thinking…that’s not what you want when you’re 2-0 down and wanting promotion
