Feeling really flat after last night. 07:44 - Apr 15 with 558 viewsblueprint

The funny (not really) thing is I was actually almost convinced we would go and lose last night but it still didn’t prepare me for this feeling of mass disappointment this morning.

I'm flat because I convinced myself that we'd really turned a monstrous corner in terms of winning big games. This squad has a unique habit of bringing you back down to earth with a bump.

Given the carrot that was in front of them last night, I still can't get my head around the fact we didn't turn up. It's unforgivable, really. They should be fired up and raring to go, not meek and mild.

Sometimes I wonder whether McKenna's horizontal demeanour means the players are almost too level-headed? In a game like last night, it needed a bit of fire and brimstone to roll the sleeves up, dig in and get the points (or at least a fecking draw).

Do the players *want* PL football? I guess the next week or so will tell.

The result didn’t bother me as much as I thought as it highlights the weakness that we have all known for the whole reason but have papered over with some pretty scrappy wins. This team is so far from premiership football it is unreal. Majority of our wins have come from mostly technical goals from some good individual players.

Yesterday, ok the pitch was bad, weather even worse which did not help but highlighted how far away we are or this team is. We had less passion, were outfought, outmuscled and outtackled for most of the game by a very determined Portsmouth. It wasn’t luck, they deserved the win by a country mile. Every man for them knew what they were doing and they scrapped for every last ball.

We don’t have this scrapping mentality or players that can play to it which is what they will need in the premiership football to have half a chance . Our winners of most games have come from technical players but who we know from last time are not technical enough to compete at premier level so what does that leave us? We would need to replace pretty much the whole team.

I have been enjoying doing well and enjoying the wins but in back of my mind knowing this and feeling a little dirty that the players are fighting for a promotion and in all likelihood if achieved will never play in the step up as will be treated like Neil at Sunderland.

We have not recruited to the way it was stated and what we have known, physical and athletic players. This team would be blown over but pretty much every premier league team technically and if we can’t outbattle a team then what is left.

I truly thought that as well.

I thought this team was past throwing in these rank away performances. Saturday was almost confirmation of that!

Then we got whatever that was ....

Yep. We weren’t casual on Saturday, but very often we are and we were back to our most casual last night. Pompey ran rings around us and we didn’t seem to care too much that they did.

Poll: Escaped Goat of the day. Who’s it going to be?

Maybe we used up all the fire and brimstone on Saturday? That game will have certainly taken a lot out of the players mentally. Very hard to get yourself back up to that level again just a few days later.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
