The real threat as far as Europe is concerned is whether NATO exists in anything other than name. The most obviously vulnerable countries such as Poland & the Baltic Republics have already ramped up their defence spend; Germany is increasing it. Good old Starmer talks about it, but is incapable of making the necessary unpopular decisions on how to fund it - higher taxes or cut something else. While some might think that things will get better in a few years after Trump is gone, let's not forget the USA could come up with someone as bad or worse, such as JD Vance.

No way that Vance is getting anywhere near the big job. He's not even popular in his own house.

There is no mechanism in NATO for suspending individual nations. Let alone at the behest of one other member, when the country in question has done nothing against the alliance's charter.

And, indeed, isolationism is the normal mode of US international relations. The post-WWII deep engagement is the exception, rather than the rule. I have heard some commentators suggest that, apart from the intel sphere, the US departing NATO would not have that bad an effect. If properly coordinated, Europe has enough to defend itself from Russia and most other immediate threats..

Russia's military isn't in good shape, as has been shown by their struggles in Ukraine. But your key phrase is "if properly coordinated" as it seems near impossible to get even a few European nations to agree on anything. And Putin knows that Western Europe has no stomach for a conflict involving body bags.

It seems to me that the ‘might is right’ approach is doomed to failure anyway. Iran are holding the world to hostage and the US are impotent to stop them despite them having the largest military force. Short of nuking them off the face of the earth, their options are very limited as they seem to be running out of missile that have taken many, many years to slowly stockpile (if various reports/best guess assessments are true). Apparently the US can produce about 10 tomahawks a year, but are now being restricted because there’s a shortage of the raw materials that travel through…wait for it…the Straight of Hormuz. You couldn’t make it up. The answer to things like this is always going to be diplomacy. The way to have prevented it was diplomacy. Europe wouldn’t need a lot of firepower to provide a deterrent, but the emphasise should be on strengthening international relationships and rules based order, be that around trade or social programmes. IMO anyway. It seems bleedingly obvious to me, but what do I know? And besides, I don’t invest in shares in arms companies either, which is going to be a large part of this.

Thing is, it could be coordinated under the umbrella of a rebranded (and maybe expanded) NATO. That has worked quite well for several decades. It doesn't need to be a completely new structure.

Russia's military unfortunately isn't in bad shape. They've spent the last 4 years demonstrating that they are not expansionist, whilst developing and improving Iranian drone technologies and having endless practice at neutralising and depleting "game changing" NATO military technology.

Why would a country with a population of about 40% of the US want to increase its internal threat of attack by taking over populations of countries which hate it.? They did it once before with dramatic failure. Oh yes, it's because Putin's crazy. When Putin goes... he's pretty old, we'll discover what hardline crazy Russian politics looks like.
