Snooker at the Crucible tomorrow… 11:54 - Apr 26 with 953 viewsITFC_Forever

…. Looking forward to it.

Know Sheffield a bit as our eldest is at uni there, but wondered if anyone has been before and what the general experience is like?

It’s one of the national iconic sporting events, I’ve done a few now:
FA Cup Final
Wimbledon
Test Match at Lords
London Marathon (watching!)
Darts at Ally Pally

There’s others as well which I’m not so bothered about as I’m not such a fan of the sport; Rugby at Twickers and Silverstone GP probably the big two.

Wouldn’t mind the Grand National or Cheltenham Gold Cup either to be fair.

It’s just like the darts. Put on your Super Mario costume and turn up 5 pints in.

Sounds like a plan.

You’ll see me on tv, I’ll be the one that jumps up and sings “stand up if you love the snooker” just as someone’s about to take a shot.

I went many years ago. Watched a first round match session 1. Absolutely incredible venue and experience. Ronnie O’Sullivan v Peter Ebdon. Ronnie won the session 7-2.

Surprised Ebdon didn't send you to sleep.

The two matches scheduled for our session are Higgins v O’Sullivan and the one I think we’ll see is Selby v Yize.

Used to go first round first Monday for years until we got fed up with making Barry Hearn even richer with ticket prices. This year we had an afternoon at the qualifiers and a session in Sheffield and still had change.

It’s brilliant. Easy to get drinks and snacks, fairly comfortable seating and decent ish view from all areas. First time I went it was surreal seeing the two table set up and remembering so many great matches I had watched growing up. In my limited experience, no bell ends or posh half wits there, which is refreshing for a major event.

Life Lesson. Do not watch Peter Ebdon after 4 pints of Abbeydale Moonshine.

He didn’t have a chance. ROS was at top of his game. Incredible. A ton in five minutes.

I went 2 years ago as a "bucket list" item, similar to your list.

I'm glad I went, but I think I'd built it up too much & was expecting it to be slightly better after 35+ years of watching it on TV. It maybe didn't help that the two sessions I went to were a bit underwhelming, so hopefully you get to see a decent game(s).

Hope you have a great time, ace selection of matches, both very finely poised.

I did the Masters at Ally Pally in January for the first time, and it was fantastic. The fan zone, the food, easy parking outside, and because there was only ever a maximum of 2 sessions a day, it wasn't overcrowded. A great experience, tickets were modestly priced too.

You really picked the right session to attend!

With Ronnie sadly out, I doubt I will watch any more of the Worlds this year. For me, he's the only snooker player worth watching, with that mix of brilliance & vulnerability.

Poll: Should horse racing be banned in the UK?

When I was at Uni there I used to sit outside of the ‘head of steam’ have a few pints and watch on the screens they put up in the square outside the Crucible. Proper fanzone type setup... Not sure if they do that still, as last time I was there this time of year that weren’t doing it.

Though I tried to relive some of my student days and was having a drink in Cavendish on West Street watching the snooker highlights. I was sat by the window and Neil Robertson was walking past, cue in hand, stopped next to me (through the window) watching a highlight of him sinking a black. He turned looked at me gave a nod as if to say ‘not bad’ then strode off again..

Before morning matches we would mooch about the Winter Garden. It joined onto a hotel and we once watched Willie Thorne having breakfast through the glass. We wondered if he ate it in colour order, alternating tomatoes and finishing on the black pudding.

We certainly did pick a good session a year ago when we booked the tickets!

We were on the Selby - Yize table, but could follow what was happening in the Higgins - O’Sullivan game. When that finished, it was one of those Crucible moments where our table had to stop for a moment to let the noise die down.

Selby and Yize also served up a fascinating game, with both missing straightforward pots at key times, so you never knew what was going to happen next.

Managed to get locked out of one frame as I didn’t make it back from the loo in time…

Couple next to my wife were from Frinton On Sea.

Yes the picnic area and big screen is still set up in Tudor Square, we had a pint outside there before we went in.

Winter Gardens also has various snoooker bits set up.
