QPR are always a dangerous side as they showed last game when they should have beaten Derby in similar circumstances. It just takes a red card etc to change a game. But if we play at our level we should win

It is a really weird one because you are right and if we get promoted this season it is a great achievement. I really don't care how much money you have spent, getting out of the championship is tough. I do also think that it is fair to say that the general performance level this season (not results, just performance) has been slightly underwhelming throughout the season. Lots of factors for that but its one for after we win on Saturday.

I hope so, I don't want to be anything other than 2nd in the live table, for the whole of the game, not even for 1 second! [Post edited 1 May 12:33]

I think a lot of weight has been given to a handful of away games like Portsmouth, Wrexham or Leicester, where we seemingly threw away points, often through a ten-minute wibble. But they are the exception, not the rule - which is why they've stuck in the memory. But we've also fought back from going behind to get a draw on several occasions. The fact we haven't lost after scoring first is pretty remarkable. Even Brum H and Nodge A, while nerve-wracking, were actually good displays of defensive toughness. Just a single loss at PR is impressive. Because we haven't dominated the division, as many seem to have expected, an atmosphere of disappointment and vague dissatisfaction has become prevelant.

Agreed. Not many games (for me anyway) where i've watched and though "what a team this is" We've had games where we win and aren't particulary impressive and quite frankly was an awful game (i give you Hull away). | | | | Login to get fewer ads

So we're tougher but with less flair? That might stand us in better stead should we manage promotion.

Well maybe, but not with (most of) these players unfortunately.

I think we'll keep the core of the defence. More of the changes will be in midfield and attack.

Perhaps. I really don't expect us to dominate the division and can appreciate a gritty win. I do agree that we have had a lot of good defensive performances although comparatively to previous seasons our defence has been around average for a "promoted" side as opposed to outstanding like a Burnley were. That is just in terms of goals conceded. What I would say though, is that I don't think it has been a coaching issue I do think we have a personnel issue. We have really missed a midfielder who can control a game, I've felt too many times this season that we have gifted possession away far too cheaply and struggled to hold control of games and the much spoken about right handed side where aside from a couple of recent games where Mcateer has been decent enough, we have just been very one dimensional and relying on Clarke and Philogene to create for us. As you say maybe I'm too harsh, I'm sure lots of people disagree but I have just expected a little bit more performance wise throughout the season.

The passing issue has been key to why things have not sparkled like before. Think it's a combination of factors. Firstly, the squad is not so tightly knit as that which came up from L1. The instinctive partnerships which allow crisp passing are only just coming together. Secondly, the current fashion for hard pressing and tight marking gives us no time on the ball and leads to frequent interceptions. We weren't facing so much of that two years ago (but did in the Prem). Thirdly, partly in consequence of the second point, we have been going long a lot more. That's always a bit of a lottery as to who gets there first, who is strongest and where the second ball ends up. Thus I'd agree, it's largely outside McKenna's control.
