The resignation letter. They might get there in the end!

"For decades, Westminster has overseen the managed decline of towns like mine. We have talked big, then acted small, stuck in a politics of incrementalism that cannot meet the moment. We have lost the trust of those our party was built to serve.

It is my unwavering belief that nothing short of urgent, radical, courageous reform will make a difference. That must start with a change in leadership."

"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."

I think I'd re-join the party because it would be a sign the party had moved away from right-leaning factionalism, even if Burnham is far from a radical lefty.

But he's got to get the permission of the NEC to stand first.

I’d have you over Streeting, even if you’d make everyone wear short trousers and have warm milk at break.

That's quite a take from someone who's stepping down to let the man who signed off on privatising Hinchinbrook hospital have a go.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I've seen a late night show on Japanese television along those lines...

We don’t need a radical lefty though, we need the country united against fascism and decline

Seemingly well informed reporter on R4 6pm news thought the NEC would OK it (tho I may have misheard, as I was driving at the time).

Burnham would be great - a fighter and a doer, as well as uniting both PLP and wider membership (I'd been considering jacking my card in - would laminate it & happily replace in wallet if AB becomes leader!).

The problem is he wont win the by-election. I want him as the next prime minister but I think Reform win the seat.

The Labour Party in England will need to do what Scottish Labour did to win Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse last year - knock on every door and make every voter feel valued, listen to every opinion and ask for every issue that a voter wants fixed, plus wheel out all of the big guns who are supporting Burnham. People like to be noticed.

No one is perfect but I imagine the NHS would be in much better shape if the National Care Service which he was behind had come to fruition.

As a reminder (from Wikipedia).

As health secretary, Burnham proposed the creation of a National Care Service, which would introduce a publicly funded system of social care free at the point of use along the same lines of the National Health Service.[33] In July 2009, the Department of Health released its green paper Shaping the Future of Care Together, which proposed a National Care Service "on par with the NHS".[34] This was followed by a public consultation in September called the "Big Care Debate", which was promoted by Prime Minister Gordon Brown as a "crucial national debate".[35] The consultation found a public desire for social care reform and explored different ways to introduce the NCS. The government decided to introduce the NCS gradually and in different stages, with the first stage beginning with the Personal Care at Home Act 2010, which was passed in April 2010.[36]

Burnham formally launched the NCS a month earlier, giving all elderly and disabled people free social care. The second stage was planned to begin from 2014 and would extend free social care to people who were in residential care for more than two years. A third and final stage would fully introduce the NCS, giving all adults free social care after 2015.[37][38] However, following Labour's defeat in the 2010 general election, the Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition of David Cameron and Nick Clegg scrapped the NCS and the Personal Care at Home Act 2010 was later repealed.

Surely they would’ve had an inkling he’ll get accepted before that poor MP resigned!?

I fear that Reform and the Tories will form an electoral pact and one will stand down to consolidate the right wing vote.

As with DJR I would consider renewing my party membership were Burnham to be in the leadership race, not that I don’t have my reservations.

Douglas Alexander, the Secretary of State for Scotland, has confirmed on Sky that Burnham won't be blocked.
