Anyone watch 'Believe Me', the ITV drama based on the horror of John Worboys' 18:04 - May 19 with 358 viewsRyorry

('Aka ''The Black Cab rapist') crimes? 4-parter that finished last night.

Wasn't expecting much, but was as good (hard to attach that word to it though, as unexpectedly, I found myself reacting very emotionally to it - upset, in tears, angry) as 'Mr Bates v. the Post Office'.

What those women went through - not just from the perpetrator himself, but from the Met's scandalous ineptitude, shoulder-shrugging couldn't care less attitudes & downright refusal for years to acknowledge any wrongdoing or responsibility (I know, what's new ..).

Got to pay tribute to the three who fought to take action through the legal system & won not just compensation, but apologies from the Met *and* a change in the law in 2021 for better treatment of victims. Was probably as a result of that, that a friend of mine managed to get a conviction and jail sentence for the guy who raped her via a spiked drink a few years ago. He tried for parole not so long ago but was refused. Nevertheless my friend was still badly affected all over again. And still only 3% of all reported rapes ever result in charges being brought.

It was very intense viewing with some excellent actors.
The 3% figure quoted in the closing credits does not indicate that the change in stance to believe the complainant from the outset is having much of an effect. A sad indictment indeed.

I found the portrait of the IOPC as little more than an organisation designed to limit criticism of the police by their justifying inexcusable misconduct to be very consistent with my experiences of same organisation.

Same with the police lawyers seeking to do all they can to avoid apologies, learn lessons and instead defend the indefensible.

Was always thus in my experience.

Kudos to every woman brave enough to take on the police who badly let them down and whose failings led to multiple more victims of Worboys.

Thank you for posting this. I will watch it on catch up.

I’m aware of the appalling stats on rape charges and for a very long time I’ve felt that the interests of the victims in most crimes seem to be secondary to the b’stards that perpetrate them.
