I used to have that video. For the youngsters reading this around this period there was a blanket ban on any football on TV. I think it was in place for a season or two. No match of the day or anything. It was a weird time.

There used to only be the FA Cup Final live and Match of the Day highlights in the evening.

TV's were over heating and catching fire when people put blankets on them. No idea why people put blankets on TV's though!

This explains some of it. Hence that video from 86 was all we got that year. Football was very much a working class man's game and not liked by many. Fascinating to see how different it is today...

So it wasn't a ban but there was no televised live football for the first half of that season due to the lack of an agreement being reached. Did it mean no Match of the Day as well?

I don't recall it at all personally despite it being well within my living memory.

I guess it was like caged birds at night. Some people didn't realise the TVs had an off button and would just cover them with a blanket instead.

Let's hope not too many got in a muddle the other way and kept trying to find the off button on their songbirds!
