| Hackney incoming on 21:36 - May 23 by Len_Brennan | Hackney turning us down in August is not the complete rejection of Ipswich Town F.C. that it is often made out to be on here. I think it is almost certain that he would have joined us then, had we been in the position that we are now; he wasn't looking to leave Middlesbrough, his home town club, he wanted to play Premier League football. When we matched their valuation, it put him in a difficult position, as moving here would not match his footballing ambitions anymore than staying where he was, but would see him having to move away from home & the club he supports. If any of us were blessed enough to be playing for Ipswich, would we willingly leave to go to a rival club in the same league, a club that had recently spent a number of seasons in the league below? He clearly saw Middlesbrough as having a good chance of promotion & wanted to be part of that. Of course we looked like we would have a better shot at it, but from his prospective, he was likely to be playing Premier League football come next August anyway; he clearly believes in himself, rightly so, and saw no immediate gain in coming to us. If Middlesbrough had gone up, and there is a strong chance they would have had he not gotten injured, what an achievement that would have been for a local boy, one that he would have been gutted to have missed, even if we went up with them. So I would expect us to go back in for him, as he is certainly PL class & is the kind of player we need in our midfield, and while I don't expect us to get him now that he is Championship player of the season & will have many suitors, I don't think he reject us out of hand on the basis of his visit last August. |
It was an ambitious move and obviously close to coming off. Fans shouldn’t get their feelings hurt over it for the reasons you mention. Maybe he’d enjoy the new training ground! I’m sure we will make the enquiry. I actually expect it to be done sooner than later as Boro need to spend in July not the end of August. I think he goes to a more established club though. I wouldn’t be paying a ridiculous amount for him just to get him here in a bidding war either. Hasn’t played a PL game yet.

He was fairly non-committal earlier in the season when they interviewed him at Boro when talking about it

We didn’t meet his footballing ambitions then and we won’t now. His football ambitions now will be to show he can be a Premier League player and remain one after next season, and the reality is that most other clubs can offer him a better chance of that than us. He isn’t coming here....

Sorry Len didn’t mean down vote. Why are the buttons sooooo small??
| Old enough to have seen my team win a final at Wembley, but not lucky enough to witness the great Sir Bobby era. |

I’d imagine our recruitment team will not be quite so thin skinned about an earlier rejection. However, as others have pointed out. Pretty sure he’ll have better options.

Hacknet to Manure makes sense. Carrick will have known him for long time. Morris is not Premier level imo. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He didn't turn us down because he didn't want to be here, his agent told him he would get a Prem offer (which didn't happen). You don't come here for a medical if you aren't seriously considering a move
