| Fantastic! 17:39 - May 23 with 2732 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | Congratulations Hull City! Couldn’t even spend a penny this summer fitting for McBurnie to get the winner. What a get he was. Well organized and brilliant performances in a tournament football throughout, not one goal conceded and took their moments. Not to mention football won today (as well hopefully Town!) Feel for the keeper though, Boro lad but he’s seemed quite shaky all season! | |

| Fantastic! on 20:08 - May 23 by The_Flashing_Smile | I, like most people, thought Southampton would piss the play offs, with or without ill-gotten info. And having watched that final I don't feel any different. How gutted must they be feeling now? They were clearly the best team in the play offs, although perhaps they never would've got there, anyway, without spying on others. Who knows, but what an expensive error of judgement that was! |
I wouldn’t have written Hull off at all. Hull beat Ekert’s Southampton in a game they had 32% possession in with under 0.7 XG, they’re masters at it.

I certainly didn't write them off, but I don't think that tactic is, generally, sustainable. Got them up though, so fair play!

Leeds’ underlying stats are actually pretty solid - better than Sunderland’s by far in fact. So I think they’ll consolidate mid table. You’re right about Forest and Fulham - the underlying metrics are lower, and closer to Spurs.

Going to be a mental summer for them, one extreme to the other. I imagine they’ll sign a few of the Turkey World Cup squad with their connections. After all everyone wants to play in the Premier League.

The thing is, the underlying stats normally catch up with a team. It’s phenomenal that Hull have surfed a full season of results way ahead of where they’d have been expected to be. All credit to them. I suspect next season will be incredibly tough for the .

It will be but stylistically they are actually quite set up for it. They’d just need to improve their squad significantly to pull it off. They’ve got a few decent older heads at the back with PL experience like Ajayi who I thought was very good today. Not sure they can still start now though. I think their coach is very good so will depend who they can get in and if the embargo although lifted moving still affects how much they can spend on wages etc. [Post edited 23 May 20:29]

The are well set up (as a defensive unit), but where I think they’ll get caught out in the PL (obviously subject to changes), is goals conceded. Their xGA is 82 - had they been close to that, they’d have only been 2nd to SheffW. The PL is more clinical than the Championship, so all things equal they’ll concede a lot and wins will become draws, and draws losses. It will sure be interesting to follow them next season.

Their owner will spend every penny he can going to be a ride for them.

Hull seem the sort of opposite to us two years ago. Where we scored for fun and conceded loads, they are very tight at the back and well organised. Their manager has done a great job with what he has and what he inherited. Championship manager of the season for me. In the Millwall play off games, it felt a bit like the Lions had blown themselves out and especially at home stopped doing Millwalley things. Middlesbrough, who had most of the play, yesterday looked utterly toothless. If they’d carried on playing till now I don’t think they’d have scored. It’s hard against organised defence, as we found, but of course in the Premier you only get away with playing like that so many times. Palace did a year ago in the FA Cup Final but got taken apart when I saw them try it against Chelsea. You cannot do a whole season without the ball - these teams will take half chances teams in the Championship don’t. Hull are going to need a lot more than what they have, as indeed are the other two clubs. Though looking at their forum, Coventry believe they only need a few players and are a big club that’ll attract the best players. They may be in for a surprise. But for Hull, that’s for tomorrow. They will rightly enjoy the moment and their bus parade tomorrow. Well done them. One thing yesterday that got on my nerves was the commentators Middlesbrough love in. A million days in the top two etc etc. Numbnuts like Goodman and that commentator don’t seem to understand that promotion is not dependent on how many days in a season you spend in the top two, but where you finish after 46 games. Middlesbrough finished 5th. Tough.
