Another member of the 38010 club here. Without me it would only be a 38009 club, ha ha. No congestion for me as I was on my usual bench in the old West Stand. Yes we had long wooden benches in those days. The agressive Leeds fans I "bumped" into post-match thought it was a done deal. Was so glad we beat them (eventually).

| YT video on Portman Road becoming 40K on 20:18 - May 24 by Churchman | I was standing in front of the Portman (Cobbold) stand. There were no seats or Exec boxes then. I say standing. But wedged would be a better description. Being a teenager and not the tallest seeing anything bar people’s backs was a momentary thing! It was packed. I remember it being a great atmosphere/experience though. We knew it was special because it was the furthest we’d got, we had a good side and it was dirty Leeds. Where were you? |
I was only a small 14 year old but oddly had one of the best views possible considering i couldn't get to the front wall in Portman lower as normal. I managed to get perched up over everyones head at the back on the rail over the downward steps to the concourse.... dead level with north stand end penalty spot , absolutely cracking view of that David Johnson header that smashed against the bar. Dont know if snyone else remembers that?

Wow, you did very well. Far better view than me. I was in the Portman stand further up near that wooden hut thing that sat in the middle. I was actually 15 but not tall. Johnson’s header? Tbh no I don’t remember it. I did the two Filbert Street games too, but school and my dad’s work meant the 1-1 Elland Rd game was not a go-er. The neutral ground games were the first time I’d experienced anything like that. Convoys of cars, vans, buses you name it, scarves out of the windows, horns going. A great memory.

Didn't go to any of these replays but remember listening on the radio, thought wed fone it at Leeds but they got a very late equaliser iirc?... did go to Stamford Bridge though... what a travesty that was!

Yep, a late equaliser. I was listening on my little red transistor radio, Peter Jones etc - gutted. We did the next two replays (crowd were all p£ssed) but I couldn’t do Villa Park or Stamford Bridge - school again and my dad’s work, so we had to wait to 78 for those joys. Worth the wait.

I was 19 at the time and was standing in the Cobbold. Remember Johnson hitting the bar as if it was yesterday. Didn’t get to the replay at Elland Road but was gutted when Lorimer scored that last minute equalizer for them. Missed the 0-0 at Filbert Street but was lucky enough to go to the 3-2 win. Will never forget Wood’s banana shot winner that finally settled the tie. [Post edited 25 May 5:36]

It's more than just the number though, isn't it? Cobbold and Brittania are both so outdated, loads of badly restricted views, cramped and have dreadful bars and facilities. And the atmosphere only seems good when the entire stadium is singing. That point about the lower Cobbold being uncovered and not keeping the atmosphere within the stadium is valid, where I sit in SAR Upper, we can't hear Cobbold block A.

I was stretching out in my front row seat in Cobbold upper B Block. Quite a luxury for a 14 year old. The only seats in the Cobbold with any decent leg room. It was a fantastic atmosphere that day, and having knocked out Liverpool and Villa in previous rounds, and progressed further in the competition than ever before, it really felt like we could beat anyone (but we weren't taking Clive Thomas into consideration). Johnson's lob really looked like it was the match winner until it hit the bar - how many times have I replayed that in my head? I too missed Elland Rd, but made it to both the Filbert St games. Great times.

You have neatly summarised it. It’s not just number of seats but views and facilities which are now well out of date. I’ve only been in NS once since 2001 and was surprised at how little space there is within it. Churchmans is limited bu pillars but from a potential/ space perspective, I’m guessing the car park (Staples) area behind has opened up possibilities. Cobbold/Portman stand - it’s not hard to see why they need the Portman Road space to do anything. West Stand? It’s old and feels it with too many restricted views and abject facilities But there’s loads of potential with it and the area behind. I’m looking forward to seeing what they have in mind, if anything. We are not the only ones with a crumbling ground. I was surprised to see Selhurst Park so unchanged in decades. Even the new stand behind the goal was put up in the 90s. Fulham’s is odd to with the big new stand. Sort of lopsided. [Post edited 25 May 11:04]

If we dont move on the ground we will get like Norwich that have effectively not issued any new season tickets for about 10 years. They are getting a stadium full of geriatrics with few youngsters. Which does not bode well for the future. I expect most on here first went to PR with their Dad, Uncle, older brother. But with our capacity at the moment it is difficlut to fit in extra kids. Thank goodness they are planning to do something about it.

Spot on, this isn't simply a case of pure additional seats, neither the west stand nor the Cobbold are fit for purpose anymore and they both need significant work. The Cobbold holds 7,000 seats and I had heard that was the number they were looking for in the new tier of the West Stand, so that they could shut the Cobbold without reducing the capacity. If the new Cobbold is a similar size structure that would mean an overall capacity of around 44-46k which is where I think we need to be in order to be sustainable in the Premier League long term as a minimum. Once those two stands are done there aren't really any straightforward further options to increase capacity down the line so they really need to make the most of the opportunity.

Oh yeah I get all that of course, valid points, it's just about the timing and costs involved, other established Prem clubs have that fans issue too, Palace, Fulham to name just two, TV money dwarfs gate receipts which enables them to still compete with much bigger clubs with bigger attendances, It'll happen at some point no doubt, it needs to, but it's going to be interesting to see when exactly ...
