Also, think how much the employers NI is paid on those wages. at 13.8% that would be say £10m of that. So £40m off Capology Plus say £10m Ers NI, PLus McKenna's wages (£5m). There were 189 "football" employees and 180 admin. So £22m (minus bonuses) for 300 employees is about £73k per person. Unlikely but its probably more accurate than you're making out. Don't disagree about NI. It's actually spelled out in the accounts and is £10.18m on NI and £306k on pensions, so your maths looks right on that, but considering it includes everyone from the CEO on more than £75k, down to staff in Planet Blue (on much less than £75k), it still looks to me like a big underestimate. Although Capology does sometimes include bonuses, might just be new for this year, but it has Sunderland giving £16M in bonuses this year (which I didn't count in my comparison). It didn't have any for us last year, but I doubt our bonuses would be significant in the Prem as we failed to stay up. I would think some players will get some performance related ones, but there isn't a big one like when we went up and £16m was distributed across all staff. Problem with sites like Capology is that they get very good data for North American leagues where things are very public because of their Wage Cap centric models. In football, it is far more obscured and it's why I'd ever only use it as an indication.

As you say, it's probably a decent "guide". Yes the bonuses won't have been substantial I wouldn't imagine unless Delap was on £1m a goal or something...!

| Elliot Anderson over £100 million? on 12:09 - May 27 by Kievthegreat | I agree with the point that Sunderland spent better than us and that we didn't get good value for money with some of the business we did. However Sunderland did spend (based on Transfermarkt) an additional £50m or about 40% more. Will be interesting to see about wages. That will have to wait until next accounts come out, but I'd fancy them to have had a bigger outlay there too. Not to diminish their performance, they were more than £50m better than we were last year IMO. However would that extra money have tipped us over the edge? |
I don't think so. I mean we were shopping in completely different markets. That $50M I doubt would have been invested from the top leagues in Europe, as Ashton told us what the model was. "British academy players". I think we made quite a few mistakes to be honest. It was the second most spend for any promoted club ever I believe at the time. I don't think going that hard in the EFL was a particular wise strategy with that much cash and when you look at the McAteer fee, I am not completely sure all lessons have been learned there. Luckily getting over the line this year ensures a minimum of 5 straight years of parachute money, so we can change course, hopefully with better people in place in the global markets. Just my opinion!

In your opinion Luton approached it better than we did!

| Elliot Anderson over £100 million? on 13:30 - May 27 by ElderGrizzly | And Sunderland hadn't jumped 2 divisions in successive years. I'm not sure why JJJ is overlooking or dismissing our L1 to Champ to PL journey. It had a huge impact/influence on how we could recruit and plan. Yes we got some things wrong, but that jump is a huge ask for anyone. Sunderland had been a PL club in the not too distant past too. Same for Leeds. |
But Sunderland changed nearly all of their starting eleven so it didn't really matter what journey their team had been on.

I think I phrased the ending clunkily. I agree with you. If we had spent an extra £50m that season, Sunderland would still be better than us because we weren't shopping in the same places. The tip over the edge related to staying up, not beating Sunderland. If you want bang for your buck and immediate performances, it can't be paying a premium for young English talent unfortunately. I still think it has a role in the fabled "player trading" model. See for example Delap and Hutchinson, but staying up is worth more than player trading. EDIT: Added the clarification on "tipping over the edge" [Post edited 27 May 21:55]
