Top player was Trevor. People used to go on about how good he was in the air. He was but there was so much more to his game, not least his bravery and ability to bring his team mates into the game. Well over 300 games and goal scored at a rate on 1 in 3.
In that time he was a tad overshadowed by David Johnson 1st, Paul Mariner and even Alan Brazil but he shouldn’t be. His record speaks for itself. One of the club’s best strikers.

"as he likes to point out, he's not just a player who wins the ball in the air"
Gerry Harrison after Whymark's second of four goals in the 7–0 win over West Brom.

A year or two back I was watching one of those Big Match Revisited recordings. You know, Brian Moore n all that. I think it was West Ham away. Whymark got totally cleaned out by Billy Bonds or his mate. A real rag doll special. Nailed. Now today, a player having been clobbered like that would have been rolling around, slapping the turf, screaming, calling on a MASH unit, the full hysteric.
Trevor? Just got up, flexed the legs and carried on. No noise, no change in facial expression. Got on with it. Hard days, hard men. He might have looked a little frail compared to some, but Mr Whymark was as tough as old boots. You had to be in those days in addition to being able to play.
Proper player.
