World Cup nostalgia on 08:56 - May 30 by ellaandred
1966 - watched every England match with my late father. Loved it ! I had a wall chart from the Radio Times which I religiously filled in after every match.

What was the TV coverage like back then ?. Was it just England games shown live or all of them ?

Italia 90. If my dad had liked footy I daresay I might've had vague memories of Mexico 86 but football was not on my radar at that point. But I do remember anytime anyone handballed it at school, there would be an immediate chorus of 'Maradona! Maradona!'. So Italia 90 it is, and yet... my parents were so bloody strict with my bedtime I wasn't even allowed to stay up to watch the later England games. So my abiding memories of the tournament are 1) an afternoon game, involving Colombia and this exciting team called Cameroon. Rene Higuita trying to do a Cruyff turn near the halfway line, being pickpocketed and Roger Milla scoring for Cameroon. 2) my mum coming into my room to wake me up the morning after the West Germany semi final and telling me, in a sad voice, that England had lost and we were out.
I waited four long years for the next edition.. and we bloody didn't qualify did we.

2002 I remember watching England play Nigeria and Brazil in my primary school canteen at breakfast time.
2006 and Euro 2004 I struggle to distinguish from each other.
2010 was the first one I attempted to watch every game, a tradition I’ve tried to uphold since. Objectively not a great World Cup but my favourite one because being 16 and having the whole summer to watch football and have fun was the best.

Mexico 70.
I won a Nabisco World Cup paperback before the tournament for booting a football through a car tyre. It was rubbish. Chief memory was the disappointment of the West Germany game. That and my mum saying Bobby Moore was guilty of theft because he had shifty eyes.
The world was black and white in those days and the tv needed a thump on the top, a third of the way in from the left, to fire it into life sometimes. But it behaved in the World Cup well enough.
Ahh, Rivellino, Jairzinho, Tostao and the greatest of them all, Pele. The best team ever.
Same - I had the sticker book. If I remember rightly Alf Ramsey was hard to get. Even though we had black and white Brazil always seemed to play in colour. Loved the Peru kit.

Peru with their sash strip and Argentina (allegedly) bribing their way through. Netherlands with their total football. Tickertape all over the pitch. Archie Gemmell. TV coverage felt like it was coming from another planet.
Peru what a player was that Teofilo Cubillas in that tournament also Argentinas Mario Kempas.

1974 and Cruyff, remember a bit about the Brazil and Scotland games. West Germany v East Germany, Brazil v Holland and the final. 1978 remember all of it very well. Me and my poor old dad, god rest, went to a golfing buddies for the evening of the Peru game and he was very ‘you must support the home countries’. Honestly, we were crying through that game it was so funny and cubillas was unstoppable.

I can't really remember, but certainly all the England games were shown live. I think some of the games kicked off at the same time so not all games could be shown live. Perhaps someone else might remember. Also, there were only two main channels that showed sport, BBC 1 and ITV.

My only experience with the sport up to that point was playing in little leagues. It wasn't televised at all here in the states outside of the World Cup. I didn't even know adults played the sport before I saw that tournament.
