They used to manage these games with smaller squads, and had to make do with fringe players when they had to. Not anymore. Games entirely skewed in favour of the already massive.,

There were 4 Belgian teams. it wasn't very hard to get into. Of course, we all remember Saint Etienne (in particular) and Köln as packed full of legendary names, but Alkmaar didn't take any particularly great scalps on their way to the final.

When we won it in 81 we destroyed Widez Lodz, they had knocked out Juve and Man U i believe. Check out all the other teams that were in it that year. What we did was one hell of an achievement, espeically with all the games we played, and such a small squad!!

Yeah, we were rubbish - we should give it back and scrap it from our history books!

You're kind of missing my point. I'm not knocking the achievement. I'm just getting at the idea that back in the day the European competitions were about the best or next best. There were all sorts of clubs in there. As I say, the 5th best team in E. Germany. Coefficients were a big thing. We surely agree that one of the most historic midweek nights in Town's history is the win in Köln. I think Köln had finished 5th in the Bundesliga the previous season, but then they went to Barcelona and smashed them. Köln were a superb side (Schumarker, Littbarski, Muller, Woodcock and more), but they were only in the competition because they finished 5th in the Bundesllga. My point was only that the Champions League now is in a way like the UEFA cup then, -full of teams that finished 4th or 5th in the 'big leagues'. (The 'big leagues then, according to UEFA coefficients, were W.Gemany, Netherlands and Belgium. E. Germany had more teams in the competition than Italy.)

Lets be real, it's a ruse to stop the ESL breaking away, some of these teams finish 30+ points behind the champions, so it is a bit laughable in that respect. Having said that, cream usually rises, and we had a final this season with the English and French Champions.

There are 55 football associations in UEFA, how many of those 55 domestic league champions are amongst the best 32 teams in Europe? Barcelona, Arsenal, PSG, Bayern, Inter for sure. Porto, Club Brugge, PSV, Bodo/Glimt, Galatasaray, AEK Athens, maybe. Beyond those 11 champions (all of whom will be in next season's CL anyway), the other 21 teams you've got to be better than to win the tournament are all going to be stronger than whichever national champions you replace them with.

I agree it should be proper champions only, not fourth place finishers! [Post edited 4 Jun 22:27]
