| Trump farting as he falls asleep in a presser announcing a $750m coal… 08:35 - Jun 5 with 2025 views | unstableblue | … industry investment package just sums up the damaging stain on American government and policy his Republican Party represents. Coal? in 2026? Largely for power generation including for data centres. Forgetting the climate impact, it’s a dirty emmissions and blinkered short term thinking play Meanwhile Richard Tice doubles down on full blown climate change denial. For context see below on China direction (albeit it would be foolish to suggest their coal investment and reliance is still not significant, but they aren’t actively blocking wind generation as per the orange one) - US is a paltry 17% wind/solar! 1. Coal plant approvals have fallen from peak levels After a surge in 2022–2023, when China approved over 100 GW of coal capacity annually, approvals dropped sharply in 2024. First-half 2024 approvals were down roughly 80–83% year-on-year according to CREA and Global Energy Monitor. 2024 was the first annual decline in approvals since 2021. 2. Renewables are now outgrowing coal China is deploying wind and solar at a scale unmatched globally. By 2025, wind and solar capacity exceeded thermal power capacity for the first time, and renewable generation growth was sufficient to meet essentially all growth in electricity demand. 3. Coal generation may have already peaked One of the most important indicators is not plant construction but actual electricity generation. According to Wood Mackenzie data reported in 2026, China's coal-fired generation fell in 2025 for the first time since 2015 despite electricity demand continuing to rise. Additional demand was met by renewables, nuclear and hydro rather than coal. | |

It's utterly tragic | | | |

We could have been riding that wave and leading in renewables ourselves. But starmer allowed his been green investment package to be neutered under fiscal and political pressure. Boat missed.

How could we have led the world - nobody is buying renewable assets from the UK at multiples of what you would pay from those made in China?

Because technology is something we do very well. We wouldnt take China on at the manufacturing, of course.

Of course but we are always at a competitive disadvantage on that front too. China has no IP protection so they just reverse engineer everyone else’s work. So we (Europe) spend a fortune on R&D costs and adhere to patents, therefore development cost is much higher for us too. Would also add that my understanding is Great British Energy’s mandate was never around R&D but was focused on the power generation side. [Post edited 5 Jun 16:16]

That the Dems aren’t running wild with the Sleepy Don narrative is baffling.

Because it would be dismissed as "fake news" and believed by many as such.

Denmark and Germany have a lucrative wind turbine manufacturing sector. Thatcher fixed elements of UK industry, but the move to a service industry, meant we missed much of this opportunity.

They are relatively small scale globally - China has around 80pc market share. It’s more complex than blaming someone from 40 years ago - the UK has the most expensive energy costs in Western Europe, and manufacturing renewables is power intensive (Chinese subsidies its coal plants to reduce costs for its domestic suppliers). That’s why the UK has fallen behind (bear in mind whilst we have a successful car manufacturing industry, that’s largely due to generous government incentives), and an established supply chain of supporting industry. We’re still a massive offshore wind player. Second only to China (I think). We did have the potential to be the leader in biofuels, but Cameron’s government wouldn’t commit to a clear policy direction (never mind investment) and so we lost our promising, embryonic companies and entrepreneurs to overseas (especially US ironically - but I wonder how they’re getting on over there now!).

Yes, in terms of generation, it was the implication that the scaling down of the Green Energy plan which I assumed to mean Great British Energy was a huge loss. It didn’t really amount to much more than subsidising already well capitalised companies, and didn’t even include any JV ownership of the assets, let alone creation of a domestic manufacturing industry.
