You would think FIFA wouldâve got visas sorted for all of their officials, referees, support staff, etc. with exemptions for people who needed them all sorted in conjunction with the US government well ahead of the poor guy flying all the way to Miami to then be refused entry and deported to Turkey. As much as this feels like the US are doing a terrible job of the logistics behind hosting the tournament, FIFA come out of it equally badly (not that anyone holds them in particularly high regard anyway). | |

Thing with the dodgy hosts is that they wanted to present an image of themselves by sports washing and so toned things down in the lead-up and during the tournament. They tried to put on a show for the global audience. Obviously they didn't turn into Utopian societies and if you were LGBTQ, then they were still pretty damn hostile, but they made an effort to look less sh1tty, even if they were still sh1tty once the cameras left.
Even Hitler in 1936 relaxed some anti-Jewish laws for a few months. Obviously because the Nazi's were evil, they were straight back to it once the world of sports had left and made up for lost time, but they wanted to present themselves to the global audience.
While America under the current administration is not nearly bad as any of those places (even if it is getting shittier politically), it also isn't trying to show itself in better light for other countries. Teams from Latin America playing in the US? Good opportunity for ICE. Price Gouging? American tradition. Somali referee not permitted to attend? Good, keep those al Qaeda types out! |  | | |
