| This is at the heart of it I think JJJJ on 21:19 - Jun 10 with 677 views | unstableblue | How to exit something so special and positive, a bond with fans and town that was remarkable.. without sullying it... Shattered yes, but a separation from his 4 years at town in the best possible way.. good memories on the crest of the wave. A argument perhaps - that McKenna, who is a highly intelligent man, looked around his squad, our off field technical set-up.. and thought there isn't enough here to stave off another relegation on my CV.. I'm knackered, let me leave in style, with goodwill and go again next summer. | |

Leaving on a high like this is arguably the best way, and not going to a club not a million miles bigger than ourselves, e.g Fulham, and assuming he's comfortable and happy with the decision he's made and there's nothing else going on, this feels like a good way. Fair play to him for putting family first. I don't think we (Ashton) would have ever sacked him, and we would have always tried to fend off interest from other clubs, so he's almost done us a favour by taking those sorts of scenarios out of the club's hands. Legend.

I have to take my hat off to a man who has achieved so much, values what's really important in life and departs on his own terms. Hate to see him go but so pleased he was our manager.

Ideally winning the Conference League with an unbeaten home record in about five years time but that was always going to be a bit of a long shot.

Yep and would have meant basically building 3 new teams in 3 years. We would still be favs for relegation with or without him at the helm in August. I don’t blame him at all, has earned it and can afford it. Will be back in the game soon enough no doubt. [Post edited 11 Jun 2:16]

An element of that, imagine being faced with having to sack him, that would seem insane even if we had 1 point by Halloween. When trying to take some of the emotion out of it, I’m feeling weirdly ok about things. So many people can’t leave on their own terms in life, whatever the career. Parachute money clock reset in worst case scenario, legacy secured and new chapter beckons. Five years is a long long time in football, we are lucky as a fanbase to experience it. We’re not completely doomed either, it’s currently one of the best open vacancies in football because we are a PL club. [Post edited 11 Jun 2:24]

Good point; and whiIst I do firmly believe he's going because he needs a break & his family also needs him to have one, I also think there comes a time for all clubs when any manager has achieved as much as they can there, and they need new blood in to inject a new perspective and fresh impetus. Possibly KM realised that himself, as well as genuinely needing time out to recharge his batteries & see more of his family. As a kid, I didn't see much of my Dad because he devoted so much of his time to starting & keeping his own business going. i understood his reasons, but remain sad at how little he was involved with us kids as we grew up.

McKenna is the face of our revival as a club (even as a town on the map). Of course the takeover and everything that went with is the reason he had the opportunity in the first place, so plenty of people deserve credit but he’s the one who has been in the dugout throughout. I couldn’t help but thinking what if we are stranded by mid November. The noise and feeling around the place would be tough. Didn’t want it to happen but do think it was best to end on a high. We were two less points and a playoff loss away from the narrative being it’s been two failed seasons with loads of money spent. Fine margins, he got it done, we made it back, sometimes things come to their natural end. Even though it might not feel like at the moment, it could end up working out for all parties with a reset. Yeah, it's definitely the McKenna we have learned to love and who loves our club and players that would willingly walk away from us now and leave a sh1tstorm in his wake. Are pigs flying in US skies today?
