Was McKenna ever in the bookies sights… 13:27 - Jun 16 with 1799 viewsDecageBruce

Before we appointed him.

I’m trying to think back to who we were linked to and if KM ever became favourite or was in the list at all as far as they were concerned.

No, bookies odds are often nonsense.

Mark Bircham was the leading contender with the bookies for a while.

It is harder to appoint a KM type manager this time. Its less of a risk when you have the most expensive team and biggest budget in League 1.

I don't think McKenna was in anyone's sights when he was announced, apart from Ashton's & we did headhunt him, rather than he made it through the application process. I think we all thought "WTF?" when he was announced as Town's new manager.
I don't know if Ashton can pull another rabbit from the hat as the Town job is now very different, with good summer recruitment essential, but whatever process we have, it must be better than Marcus Evans ringing up his mate Dodgy Harry & saying "Harry, what to you think of X"?
"Triific".
I would much prefer us to appoint an up & coming coach from Europe, rather than the new suspects of Solkjaer, Rodgers & O'Neil.

Neil Harris was strongly rumored on here and elsewhere

From memory, if we want to believe all Ashton's yarns, then we were close to employing someone else but for Ashton it "didn't feel quite right". The owners told him to go with his gut and he went and met McKenna at a motorway service station instead.

Think McKenna entered the market very late on and quickly became the favourite, suggesting a deal was done

The other names mentioned were Danny Cowley, Neil Harris, Marc Bircham and possibly Neil Warnock but could be confusing that with any other time we've had a vacancy!

Weren't we also looking at the guy that ended up getting the Hibbs job? Jack Ross? Or was that before then?

I think that was before we appointed Paul Hurst.

Jack Ross was close to getting the Town job in the summer of 2018. He turned us down & went to Sunderland, who had just been relegated to League 1 & we went for Paul Hurst instead. Ross did OK at Sunderland, taking them to the play offs but that wasn't good enough & he was sacked in the Autumn. He was subsequently sacked by Hibs after his football was considered "too boring", also a complaint from the Mackems As while they only lost 5 games all season, they drew 19 times.

Remember - bookies odds are not a sign of likelihood, but a sign of liability. The two may overlap, but this is an easy market to move.. it only needs a couple of guys on this forum to whack on a fiver to shift the odds significantly.

No, but appointing in L1 is different to appointing in the prem. Some of the recent 'favourites' are fueled by pure speculation, but there is probably a some truth in the recurring names (GON, etc).

especially as this market is, unsurprisingly, full of leaks & inside information. That's why Knutsen is 5-4 and 5 others are 6-1 or shorter.

Cheers all.

Memory isn’t once what it was. I assumed due to how the markets worked that he wouldn’t have been in the running for long/at all given the surprise of the appointment but just couldn’t remember seeing him amongst some of those that others have mentioned
