Huge amounts to do, something for every age. This time I might do the Currywurst Museum! Brandenburg Gate - so hard to imagine how the city was divided for so long. Bits of the Berlin Wall. Checkpoint Charlie purely for tourists, so we'll all go! Museum of the DDR. Fab breweries, bars and nightclubs. Spandau & Potsdam nearby. Countryside on the doorstep. Great shopping, if that's your thing. Quite a lot about the collapse of the DDR / communism. If your interest is WW2, then research before you go as there is little obvious on the ground.

Their English Twitter admin is from Ipswich: I'm surprised they've only mentioned it on their German feed. Prices should be decent, despite the tickets being full-price: Prices will start from €7/€12/€14 plus €3 in fees.

Thanks ZX. I've been waiting for this for 16 years since I moved here. Rave the planet is the same day too, so there's not a better day for it either, if anyone wants to party after.

Took me a moment of thinking 'hang on, this link only mentions normal matchday prices' before I twigged that you can watch Union v Bayern for less than the cost of a typical English pre-season friendly. Nuts, isn't it?! Especially when you consider that a club with a stadium capacity of 22,000, charging these prices, was still able to get Champions League football.

If the DDR is your thing, I'd really recommend the state-run museum in Prenzlauer Berg - 'Alltag in der DDR' (daily life in the GDR). It's free to get in, and presents a much more balanced view of East Germany than did the DDR Museum the last time I visited.

Before booking blind, does anybody have any suggestions on areas/ where to stay? - Just want somewhere with plenty of bars, restaurants, bit of nightlife nearby. (And not to trek across the city for the match, although I’ve read the subway is very easy).

If you want to be close to the action, I'd recommend Friedrichshain as the main nightlife district. You'll also be close to the S3 for direct access to Köpenick. A good alternative is Prenzlauer Berg, which is also lively. The M10 tram will take you from there to Warschauer Straße, where you can pick up the S3. There are no bad options, though. Public transport is fantastic and, wherever you stay, you'll be within spitting distance of good nightlife and the S3.

If you've got the time and inclination, I'd recommend doing some research and looking a little further away from the city centre for food. There are some fantastic diaspora communities in Berlin (Turkish and Asian in particular), and I've had fantastic food in smaller local places outside of the Ringbahn.

The U-Bahn and S-Bahn are very easy. Went to Berlin last year, stayed in the Ibis on Anhalter Strasse - basic, but comfortable, quite cheap and within walking distance of the city centre (if reasonably mobile), plus close to the transport node at Potsdamer Platz. Not sure about the nightlife, as we were mainly out in the day seeing the sights.

The S-Bahn is (or at least was) walkable from the airport too.

Not any more - with the new airport it's now directly beneath the terminal. No walk required!

Yeah. That's why I said is/was. I thought they had built a new airport but wasn't 100% sure how close to old site it was. Not been to Berlin since '07. Need to go back really. It was still looking very much a city in transition then.

When I first moved here, I had a season ticket for both Union and Hertha, and cost half the price of a season ticket for the SBL

Might be worth looking at places like the intercity hotel, at Hauptbahnhof. There's a direct regional train to and from the airport. You're a few stops from the main areas for food, and nightlife. Also you S3 S-bahn from Hauptbahnhof will get you within 5 minutes walk from the ground.

It's not what it used to be, sadly. Lots of the homogenous 'European capital city' crap these days. They've built on most of Alexanderplatz, and one of the flagship stores is Primark, for fick sake. A lot of cultural vandalism going on as well. The rules seem to be that if a former DDR building requires renovation, it's deemed full of asbestos and demolished, whilst old Western buildings get all the attention they need. There was a lovely Eastern European style stadium up in Prenzlauer Berg that was in good enough nick to host Hertha's European games not so long ago. It was torn down earlier this year. Still a lot of the old vibe though, especially if you head out to some of the less famous spots. [Post edited 24 Jun 13:31]
