Anybody ITK on Nick Pope? 11:15 - Jul 2 with 3185 viewsnrb1985

Seems we've been linked with a few different GKs in the last week.

Does that mean Pope deal is dead or smoke and mirrors while we negotiate?

My own personal pref for the first season back in PL would be to have a really solid English GK and Pope obviously fits that perfectly.

just in case phil cares about such things, it's worth noting that the italian legal system annulled his conviction and dismissed all charges against him. he was still an awful keeper for us though.

He was not an awful keeper at all - that’s just ridiculous.

I think Nick Pope was a top keeper for almost all his time at Newcastle. He got a nasty shoulder injury and I think if you asked most Newcastle fans they would tell you his form has taking an evident drop over the last 12 months or so. I don't have data to support what I'm saying but every time I saw him for Newcastle last season he was just not convincing at all.

I will caveat this by saying Goalkeeper is a bit of a confidence position, so if he came in started well he could get back to his best, I'm just not sure it is the no brainer signing some are suggesting.

He still got back into the team over Ramsdale later in the season. They've been trying to replace Pope for two years and in both seasons realised that he was still their best option. He played Champions League games this season. He's a massive upgrade on any one we have.

If we really want to play out from the back then he might not be the best choice but I think O'Neil is going to be fairly pragmatic. We are going to be facing a lot of pressure at times and we need a keeper to be a keeper first and foremost - coming for crosses, good shot stopper. A safe pair of hands.

What keepers with 250 PL appearances can you get for £5m? That's a pittance.

Ramsdale was also pretty poor when he played for Newcastle.

I do see the logic in the Pope signing, it's not a ridiculous decision. All im saying is that for all the talk about his experience and he's played in the Champions League there is the flip side that last season he wasn't very good. If you offered me 2 seasons ago Nick Pope I would be all over it, just didn't like the way he has been trending post his injury.

Poll: Will Paul Lambert be Ipswich Town manager on the final day of this season ?

He was actually a very good keeper. People seem to have some sort of misconception in how he played.
