| Anybody ITK on Nick Pope? 11:15 - Jul 2 with 3606 views | nrb1985 | Seems we've been linked with a few different GKs in the last week. Does that mean Pope deal is dead or smoke and mirrors while we negotiate? My own personal pref for the first season back in PL would be to have a really solid English GK and Pope obviously fits that perfectly. [Post edited 2 Jul 11:16]

I dunno, I like the thought of a local lad coming back tbh. The fact he can't play out from the back is also a blessing IMO! Could really do without watching us play suicide ball in the PL again. [Post edited 2 Jul 11:20]

The reason for signing him should have nothing to do with being a local lad. Needs to be based on ability. Is he better than what we have and all the other keepers who are available? We can’t retain, sign, staff and players based on sentiment. This will be a tough season. Need the right players. That said He certainly has PL experience.

No, we absolutely need a keeper who is comfortable on the ball. Not saying they have to be like Ederson but with how teams will press us our keeper needs to be happy to receive the ball in some difficult areas, it is non negotiable. Long Kicking also needs to be good for when we play direct. Nick Pope may well still have some shot stopping ability despite a pretty poor season at Newcastle but the guy is very prone to a rush of blood and making crazy decision. There are so many good keepers across Europe who wont cost you loads of money, i would be more inclined to shoot for upside there.

There are obviously some gems at great prices in Europe - whether you can first identify them and then sign them though is a separate matter. Matteo Sereni anyone… Pope to me would be about as close to a sure thing as we could afford and won’t cost much. Risk the other way is you sign somebody for 20m from abroad who turns out to be sh1t on big wages and get relegated in any case. And they then become very hard to get off the books.

Where have I said that’s the reason we should sign him? I spelt out clearly in my OP I like him as he’s an established English PL goalkeeper. The fact he’s local is a nice to have though.

Probably not wise to mention that scumbag Italian keeper on here. Still in prison hopefully!

Admittedly I don’t watch huge deal of Prem football these days, but when I do, he seems to make a mistake most weeks, Newcastle have tried replacing him the last 2 seasons - even taking Ramsdale on loan from a relegated club - and have spent £20m already this summer on his replacement. He doesn’t fill me with much hope really, so I’d rather we stayed well clear. As an experienced back up at no.2, who might play half a dozen games, I wouldn’t be against it. But certainly not as a number 1.

I'm not sure how you can watch Nick Popes recent performances in a Newcastle shirt and think he is anything close to a sure thing. [Post edited 2 Jul 11:59]

His sentence was quashed and a retrial ordered as I understand it. At which, all charges were dismissed. Best not to talk about legal matters that could get Phil in the stinky stuff.

Not trying to be argumentative but in terms of being a “sure thing”, you, and I will have seen Nick Pope play for both England and in the Champions league in the not too distant past. Yet sounds like you’d prefer to go for an as yet unidentified European goalkeeper neither of us have likely ever heard of, never seen play and may or may not be willing to come here…

just in case phil cares about such things, it's worth noting that the italian legal system annulled his conviction and dismissed all charges against him. he was still an awful keeper for us though.
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

I remember nothing about this so did some reading up. Yikes. It is of course possible the accusations were made up or exaggerated by a psychotic ex., given what courts have said about some of the evidence. Either way at least one of them is a scumbag. Poor kids.

My preference would be a keeper on the up as opposed to a keeper on a downwards trajectory tbh. Pope was far from convincing when he played last season for Newcastle and struggled with an injury. Great experience no doubt but Kalvin Phillips would have ticked both those boxes you mentioned and it doesn't count for much if they have gotten worse. I don't get your 2nd paragraph really because all I said was there are plenty of good keepers available across Europe, I'm sure if that was the route we went down those players would have been thoroughly scouted by our recruitment department so whether we have heard of them or not is sort of irrelevant. If we sign Pope hopefully he proves me wrong.

I’m be not seen, but recent form should certainly trump his name/past record. He’s looked a bit ropey has he?

I think Nick Pope was a top keeper for almost all his time at Newcastle. He got a nasty shoulder injury and I think if you asked most Newcastle fans they would tell you his form has taking an evident drop over the last 12 months or so. I don't have data to support what I'm saying but every time I saw him for Newcastle last season he was just not convincing at all. I will caveat this by saying Goalkeeper is a bit of a confidence position, so if he came in started well he could get back to his best, I'm just not sure it is the no brainer signing some are suggesting.

I don’t think we can take a chance on a young keeper this season. Never played outside France, never played for any other club. I’d like to see us sign Pope, prem experience and England caps. Think that makes a lot more sense and cost less too.
