World Cup attendances have been genuinely incredible 17:17 - Jul 4 with 856 viewsIllinoisblue

Pretty much full stadiums everywhere, no matter who’s playing.

It is incredible what people will pay to watch live sport.

Way above what I would be prepared to pay, so maybe FIFA got it right in the end much to critics annoyance.

Charging over £1000 a ticket at resale isn’t really getting it right. The market shouldn’t decide the price of tickets. It should be set and resale at face value.

Not a direct comparison at all but there were lots of games at Euro 96 with thousands of empty seats. If the UK hosted the World Cup would a game such as Australia v Egypt even fill a Villa Park let alone a bigger stadium?

Not really the point I was making. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve really enjoyed the competition and have been lucky enough to be in a host country and city so have got to enjoy the atmosphere. I just think the ticketing policy is gross.

I really wish FIFA was properly not for profit and tickets were sold at cost. A massive sporting event like this should be accessible to all, not just to those with deep pockets or prepared to go into serious debt over it. But I know that will never ever happen. Sure, attendances have been mightily impressive but so many people have been completely excluded which is a crying shame.

Have you been to any games?

Did you think about going if not?

Lots of ex-pats and immigrants in America I'd warrant thats played a massive part. Watching a 95% Argentinian occupancy VS Cape Verde in Miami where 100'000 of them live was an indicator. What a game though.

We want to see full stadiums and atmosphere this world cup has blown away USA 94.

I looked at going to the Croatia Portugal game (before the draw) and the cheapest tickets were £550. £15,000 after the teams had qualified.

Different times and technologies. Euro 96 tickets were done through postal ballots and empty seats were primarily caused by restrictive block-booking policies, a lack of ticket-return flexibility for foreign associations, poor match scheduling and perceived high pricing, although I got a n7mber of tix for £45 - £60 throughout. I was at Villa Park for poborsky’s scoop goal!

Funnily enough these ticket failures directly drove major reforms in how UEFA and FIFA structured ticket allocations for all subsequent international tournaments and got us to where we are now with the prices we see.

Specially impressive given that the Irish, Polish and Italians did not qualify.

Not really, just because the stadiums are full Doesnt make it right that tickets are only affordable for a small percentage of the population, considering FIFA is global it’s shocking and doesn’t make them right.

When the World Cup I’d back in Europe I would fancy it but not at £thousands per ticket

The only Muff in Town.
