Back from my lunchtime wander and there were surveyors with machines measuring Portman Road and with markinga on the ground. Think they were from Randalls.

Presumably prepping for building work there with the footprint of the new Cobbold moving back towards the car park.

Also, about 25 Sky vans behind Churchman's! Ashton going mad with multi room? šŸ˜‘

I remember reading there are 5-6,000 people on a waiting list for a season ticket. So an increase in capacity is certainly needed and welcome.
The interesting questions are;
1. How much increase in capacity can we go to ?
2. How long will it take to build ?
3. How much of an effect will building work have on current attendance. I.E. How do you tell people you can no longer have an ST as there's nowhere for you to sit until it's done.

you are my ipswich !!

I would be genuinely surprised if it is the 5-6,000 that has been claimed by the club.

The recent tweaks to the stadium, and capping of Season Ticket sales will likely mean that all of the Cobbold Stand can be accommodated elsewhere in the stadium whilst building works are taking place, if the club opts to demolish and rebuild in one go.

I doubt that they would be prepping for building work of the Cobbold.

I can't see that happening until the 28/29 season. But, it's entirely possible that they are plotting services as they run down Portman Road prior to the aquatic centre getting started, which will be before the Cobbold.

I don't think it'll be 5-6000 with the West Stand redevelopment, they will be looking to get as many home fans as possible from the Cobbold over there. For away fans, there are a number of areas in the ground that don't have big numbers of season ticket holders. (SAR Sections 6 and 4 for example).

The capacity of the Cobbold is 7000, but 3000 of those will be away fans who will get moved to the SAR Lower, I think, probably into Sections 5 and 6. Apparently, there are only about 1000 season ticket holders in the Cobbold, but I'm not sure how accurate that is?

I would imagine the reconfiguration of the West stand will add an additional 1500-2500 seats getting that stand to around 10,000 capacity, prior to the demolition of the Cobbold. They will then look to build a 'new' Cobbold with a capacity of around 15,000 at a guess, bringing the overall capacity to the targeted 40,000

And, if the stadium capacity is brought down to about 23k during the Cobbold re-development, then the club will only need to accommodate 2,300 away fans, right?

West is already about 10, end stands around 7. Cobbold is the smallest stand nearer 6k. According to a friend who was on the ground tour a few days back, we are now looking at adding around 6K to the West. The Cobbold is some way down the road and will only be done if we can sustain ourselves in the Premier league for 4-5 years.

The new Main Stand at Crystal Palace is projected to cost between £150M to £200M.

If the Cobbold Stand replacement costs anywhere near that much, then like you say we'll need to be an established PL club before the owners consider it.

If we're adding 6k to the West Stand, then a capacity of 36k is more than enough (albeit we'll still be lacking enough conference/hospitality facilities).

I expect there is a quick win with the west. Ashton mentioned late stage planning for an arena on the fan zone. Any building there could help support a new tier and new hospitality runnings at the back of the existing top tier.

West is 8,700. As in the planning application for the current work, (page 6 of the design and access statement). https://ppc.ipswich.gov.uk/app

If we are adding 6k to that, then we are almost doubling the height of it.
I can't see that happening, from a structural point of view alone, that would be a mammoth undertaking.

Let's not forget it was someone on a ground tour at the end of the season who was told that the West stand was 'being replaced' with work starting immediately after the QPR game.

There was a thred a few months ago that said at the end of next season they would be taking the roof off the West stand and adding a tier. That to house the Cobbold season tickets when the time comes to replaced it.

I wouldn’t expect the West Stand to have any bigger footprint than it will have when the current work is complete. Extra capacity will be created by building up on the new structure, possibly with an overhang similar to SBR.

The new structure does not have piles, it's just a concrete screed. It couldn't support a new tier and roof.

It could be a deep shallow tier. It would add height but not significantly so.

Everyone at the back of the current top tier would bang their heads celebrating and in all seriousness, it would have even more RV seats than now. There’s also the matter of how much further you’d have to cantilever the roof the existing structure was built quickly and wasn’t engineered for that expanse.

You aren’t getting another 6k on top of that stand, no matter how you configure it.

Only way to do that is build a new stand behind the current one.

I don't know the technicalities, but would it not be possible to remove the current roof, fiddle around with the top tier, and then add a new roof with external cantilevering, a bit like at Chelsea?

Which is exactly what it would be. They haven't built anything to support a new tier in the current works. It would have to be supported by whatever is going on the practice pitch.

I would imagine that whilst we are in the Premier League, we could sell that. However, if we drop into the Championship and, especially if we remain there for some time, we wouldn't do. That is the difficulty. Clearly the intention is that we remain a Premier League club.

There are no stadium tours during the summer.
So far this summer you have said -
We are putting safe standing in South Stand.
We have bought Ipswich Wanderers ground.
We are putting 6k seats over West Stand.

The first is now proven wrong, the second Phil said was incorrect and the 6k is not right either.

I would check out your sources a little more.

You are twisting a few things.

I didn't say the stadium tour was over the summer tour was over the summer. I said a recent stadium tour

We are putting safe standing in South Stand, work wont start there until the North and new disabled section is complete. Building work at the stadium is behind schedule.

We have bought Ipswich Wanderers ground.
The deal to purchase Humber Doucy lane was completed over a year ago. Ipswich wanderers already know they have ten (now 9) seasons use of the ground.

We are putting 6k seats over West Stand.
The plans for the west stand and the practice pitch are evolving, the plan has increased in size and is linked to development of an arena on the practice pitch

Ashton has frequently stated when asked that the focus is on developing the west ahead of the cobbold. It's the only way to preserve capacity. We have done it twice in the past with the Pioneer and the Sir Alf.
