It would be nice for sportsmanship to have a bigger role. You get more of a benefit though if you try to cheat the ref. Until that’s stamped out with severe retrospective penalties, it’s an uphill battle to introduce more decency into the game. |  |

I think that most fans are totally aware that hypocrisy runs deep within the sport but in that regard I respect that honesty. It’s not like Rugby Union where its fans openly proclaim how holier than thou their code is.
And I’m fully integrated in this hypocrisy - I tell my children to be respectful of refs and their opponents but then, when watching a match on telly, they hear me shouting at a Town player to go down or to make the most of any contact.

I agree. There’s a very high level of honesty in other sports like snooker, golf! But just imagine if footballers played golf they’d be kicking the balls out of the rough, moving free kicks nearer the goal, coughing when opponents are trying to hit the ball. As for snooker they would be moving balls while no one was watching playing shots with both feet off the ground.
As for claiming injuries when contact is so slight, it’s about time refs took a harder line! Move them off the pitch for five minutes or book them if their recovery is so instant as they’re clearly trying to influence the ref to either book a player or get them red carded.
It’s a bad situation that’s getting worse but the authorities aren’t doing enough to preserve higher standards. |  | | |

I can remember a televised away game (think it was Joe Royle’s last game in charge) when Jim Magilton got fouled and the Ref was going to card the offender and you could see Jim mouthing to the ref “you can’t card him for that, he got the ball!”
