For what its worth I just asked AI who should referee France v Morocco for the least controversy. It replied England's Anthony Taylor or Brazil's Wilton Sampaio as the most neutral options.

If we believe that integrity in the officiating of the game is important and that things like the referee's decision is final (OK let's not go down the VAR path on that issue) then we surely must believe in the neutrality of match officials.
We all have our own thoughts on the refereeing of some notable Ipswich games, as do Bolton fans I'm sure, but the big issues for me regarding officials both domestically and at this WC (including those in the VAR truck) is their competence rather than their alleged bias/neutrality. |  |

I usually don't go in for conspiracy theories, but with the cancelling of Ronaldo's suspension before the WC, the situation with Balogun and the way Messi has been treated with kid gloves, I think it's pretty clear that Infantino and his underlines are trying to create a "narrative". It's all about the stars.

Oh I agree that overall this is definitely entering the world of sports entertainment and Infantino is having FIFA make it up as they go along but a conspiracy that involves match officials at individual game level? Not so sure about that. Difficult to evidence either way and of course I may well be proved wrong.

Given that there has been blatant corruption in plain sight, its not a massive stretch to think that what goes on behind closed doors may also be tainted...
Regrettably, there is enough in some of the decisions in this WC (and the completely opaque use and no use of VAR, and of snicko [ffs...] to raise reasonable and genuine doubt.
The US had var used to reverse a decision under the clearly dishonest guise of it being "mistaken identity". That one alone raises some serious questions because the officials actively used a rule in an obviously incorrect way to advantage of the hosts- who of course were done further favours later.
