What I don't get is that, if there is some sort of code that players understand, the likelihood is the opposition players know the code as well as the attacking team do. The taker may as well shout over before going to take it "this one's going to be an outswinger on the penalty spot" or "inswinger on top of the keeper". I suppose the "code" prevents the fans who overhear the call from heckling them for not getting it right!

Perhaps Leadbitter's would always have been "against the first man again!"

There is no code. It's an affectation or a habit. Caught my grandson doing it before taking a corner ((under 14s match) and asked him why. He kinda didn't understand the question. He thought it was expected and everyone did it.
