As Trump is at pains to mention, it is not Iran's water way (or the US's) it is international water, so agree that I struggle to see the legality of it.

Which presents problems for vessel owners since paying Iran is likely in breach of Sanctions. Another vessel was hit by Iran today, adding to the 46 hit since the start of the conflict. The same period has seen 14 civilian seafarers killed (and dozens more injured) by Iranian attacks (sourcevUN maritime Agency).

Around 20 hit since 2021, up to the current conflict, and others ‘confiscated’ in the Persian gulf (I.e not including Iranian sponsored Houthi attacks in the Gulf of Aden). Iran mined the waters many years before the current conflict, in effect they used the waters for geopolitical leverage, often targeting Saudi tankers. Most of these things go largely unreported in the West, unless you specifically follow the region.

They've already been told that it is illegal. But this is Trump, so... He has already changed his mind. It is Tuesday after all. And of course his last 'tariff' scheme has so far resulted in $81bn in refunds (and counting). https://www.theguardian.com/us
