Anecdotally the only travellers I have met who have been to Argentina recently were a Danish couple in Colombia last year who had just been, said poverty was rampant and they felt like they were the only tourists around. This compares unfavourably with the month or so I spent in Argentina three years ago when times were difficult but the nation seemed vibrant and there were loads of travellers too. The disasters of the current President's time in office are well documented and a World Cup final will only paper over the cracks for so long. |
Indeed was rather surprised at that comment given inflation in Argentina is running at 33% (driven by currency collapse making imports incredibly expensive). The collapse of their currency means the cost of repaying their USD denominated debt is now skyrocketing. For that reason they are having to finance IMF loan repayments via sale of state assets and loans from the US (risking losing their financial sovereignty). Believe around 1/3 of the value of IMF loans globally are in respect of Argentina alone!

Interestingly the Falkland Islands were or rather the eastern part of it was occupied firstly by the French, the British claimed the western part a year later in 1765. I'd imagine the French are very glad they are out of it. The real reasons Britain wants to maintain it's claim there are these.
