Us and the French were the original settlers, at the same time, with neither knowing the other was there. The French sold their claim to the Spanish. When Spain left, Argentina randomly decided they should inherit Spain's claim (80 years after we settled). We kicked them out within 10 years. Argentina have been crying every since.
