" The road is long with many a winding turn, that leads us to who knows where? Who knows where? ".

| Thought we were supposed to be well down the road with several signings? on 17:52 - Jul 16 by Swansea_Blue | They start a lot earlier though. I think the early cup rounds are in a few weeks (somewhere like 7th August whereas we don’t start until the 22nd). Not that I’m saying we shouldn’t be getting a crack on. The sooner the better. I don’t have any faith in us getting what we need. It’s a gut feeling only plus looking at how our last PL signings panned out, or didn’t in the case of a couple of long-running sagas that came to nothing. For whatever reason, it feels like we’d hit a ceiling. I’m not sure if that’s recruitment setup/staff, Ashton, manager (KM last time of course). I wouldn’t be at all surprised if GON has pushed back against identified targets and they’ve had a reality check about the level we should have been aiming for all along. It’s a hunch only and no I have no evidence (other than the crap season last time). |
"I’m not sure if that’s recruitment setup/staff, Ashton, manager (KM last time of course)" - well if it happens again with a second manager, it's likely to be Ashton's ceiling. It's his recruitment team, his negotiating. When the stakes become high, he's simply not of the calibre we need. There'd be no rush-from-league-one excuse this time (which didn't seem to affect Bournemouth). I think Ashton would be a better COO than CEO. Keep him well away from strategy & PR. If you take the statement as a whole its more than clear. Down the road Deals where we need them to be I honestly can't see how that can be interpreted as at the very least things are moving. Subsequent to that Emmersonn is the only movement we've seen, we need to integrate a lot of players. Its not unreasonable to be concerned at this point. |
Has anyone disputed that it could be interpreted as ‘things moving’. I certainly didn’t. I only challenged the statement that deals just needed ‘rubber stamping’ to complete. That is a misrepresentation of what was said.

This, in a nutshell. I'm happy to acknowledge that Ashton has done a good job for our club, but I pay almost zero attention to anything he says, as he is always in salesman mode.

| Thought we were supposed to be well down the road with several signings? on 18:33 - Jul 16 by WolfieAtTheBack | I am sure they would have wanted as many new recruits as possible for the training games / camps mind. Signing loads of players after the camp seems the wrong way round to me as you want the players to bond and play a bit. |
you know what they'll say next "well the transfer window doesnt shut until the end of August - judge us then" By which time we've had all our pre season, embedding period for the players, new manager getting his ideas across, and a couple of difficult PL games. I'd think we need (minimum) 2 in by the end of next week - players deemed PL ready and starters

I'll concede managerial input can mean a number of things but if you take the statement has a whole it reads clearly to me that deals were alleged to be advanced and so that managerial inout can only really be a yes please or a no thank you. Had the statement been we have a list of targets but we need the managers opinion that would be different. But it wasn't, it was down the line, deals where want them to be, managerial input. As a whole I think the OP is quite fair in their assessment

| Thought we were supposed to be well down the road with several signings? on 16:11 - Jul 16 by FrimleyBlue | Maybe the players in question werent happy with who we made manager. Could work both ways |
I have been told that from someone at the club that this is certainly possible and is being cited (and im not claiming to have inside sources or anything just happen to know someone who has an official job there)

We’ve had two years to plan this window, with a likely relegation, and Dave’s for promotion. There are no excuses. He just isn’t good enough, but telling him. Captive to his ego, and to be fair, WE allowed him to be one the only football voice at the club, 22 points and the manager walking away, as well as Brett calling him out and walking away, you could see the red flags from the moon. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It all just sounds so mad but we need to beat Sunderland first game, that is a 3 points we have to get if we plan to stay up. They can't come out and say judge us by January as by then we will have like 6 - 9 points and be down, it is that ruthless this league.
