I'm certainly surprised to see him step down, and it would be interesting to know the wider reasons for his doing so.
I was delighted to see him appointed as prisons minister, but did get the impression that he wasn't necessarily able to influence policy in the way he would have hoped. | |

Yup, that's rather telling.
Given that his stance has always been that we send far more people to prison that we should, it was always going to take a radical change in public policy to allow him to bring about the changes he wants. | |
