Who signed off on that? Seemed unnecessary. I am not above pranks and low brow humour myself but tricking our players into using an electric pen just for social media clout was a bit naff, or am I alone in thinking that? The players did not respond well to that and the bulk of them seemed embarrassed and pissed off that were being used for engagement in that way. It wasn’t a good look at all. Sure, it might pick up a few likes, but I think these social media types need to remember that we’re a football club sometimes and not take the low road on some of the content we put out.

Clubs Social Media - Pen Shock on 08:35 - Jul 23 by jasondozzell

Completely agree. It wasn't funny and to be honest just another sign of the emptiness at the heart of things in the game. Some admin person probably earning a pittance having to create constant 'content'.

I was thinking how annoying it must be to be a player nowadays and have a camera shoved up your nose at every opportunity.

At the heart of the American sports entertainment complex is a paradox - all the stuff that they claim shows how engaged and unique the club is in terms of its relationship with its support actually just underlines the opposite. Every club pumping out 'content' that will be scheduled on a spreadsheet in order to farm engagement for a more important spreadsheet - the financial one.

We had a little sweet spot here when Town in 5 started and the club was still not fully 'modern game' proofed. The early ones were really good.

I really dislike the slick marketing crap that there's more and more of. Couldn't we have a proper apology from Ashton over you know what and an actual explanation of the price hikes on season tickets instead.

It is in the player contracts to fulfil media requirements, something which they get well rewarded for financially. While it may not appeal to sections of the support including yourself, it will increasingly hit home with those who spend more time on social media, so having and maintaining a presence is key. Horses for courses - if you don't like some content scroll on, if you do like it, then watch, nobody forces anyone to do either.

I personally don't care either way - my main focus remains the 90+ mins of football I watch, the rest is just background noise which I can choose to ignore.

Someone go and get the Sean Dyche gif standing in front of the brick wall.

I'd like to have seen them try to do it to Morsy. Not a chance.

It's fine, not sure what all the fuss is about.

Social media is not my bag, so I accept its not aimed at me.

Why would it not get signed off? Its not as if Ashton would be signing these things off.

I don't think it was intended to win any comedy awards.

If you think an electric pen shock is hilarious 'banter' (shudder) then not sure it's a night out worth being on...

dont think anyone suggested it was 'hilarious' -- but lighten up, it s just a bit of harmless fun or let me guess, you and the OP will probably next try and make out that it s putting the players' life in danger

quite why it even needed to be initially raised and then for you to waffle on about how this is typical of the state of modern football clubs these days is not only boring but a cheap dig at the football club. If you dont like the content then dont watch it, no ones forcing you to

Of course. But we have a sporting culture here that's slowly being dismantled for American sports entertainment. This might seem superficial but it's the direction of travel... Those 90 mins will be under threat before you know it (quite literally in the WC with the hydration breaks!).

Just because it's 'key' to have an 'online presence' (the hellish language of corporate world) it doesn't mean we have to stoop to everyone else's level.

I wonder if we're nearing a big backlash to the online world... We can but hope.

Did you find the video good and funny then? Please explain what was funny about it!

No idea how old you are but there's not many things on a football club's social media that i find funny. It's hardly ever going to be high brow humour is it?

This was fine. Absolutely not worth commenting on much like most football media posts

i m perfectly accepting of what it is -- you attempting to use a video of an electric pen to then twist it into trying to shout from the rooftops about the state of the current game is utterly pointless. You cant change it. Plenty of other sports you can fill your time up with watching if footballs getting too much for you

It comes down to perception and personal preference. Your perception of "stooping" is different to others - some will have enjoyed and found it funny.

As for the Americanisation, I will push back on that a little as it is more nuanced.

Remember that football's global social media reach massively outstrips any US sport so the "Americanisation" framing can undersell that platforms like TikTok are shaping all sports (cricket's Hundred, darts' walk-ons) in similar ways, not uniquely importing US culture.

It might be more accurate to call it "platform-isation" than Americanisation specifically.

Note that some of this predates social media and has European roots too, the Premier League's own commercialisation from the '90s onward (the "prawn sandwich" critique) shares as much DNA with British TV rights economics as with US sports marketing.

How can people moan that player announcements are boring? They are exciting in their own right!

Watch Keegan's press conference when he signed Shearer at Newcastle. That's exciting. Not 'admin' cutting people's heads onto film clips etc...

It’s a bit of light hearted comedy that happens up and down the country.

It’s good to see things like this and the camaraderie amongst the squad.

Think of the stuff that doesn’t get recorded!

I can’t believe this is even a thread, unbelievable.

You're thinking about where you're going to be sold to, your career, trying to be professional whilst knowing you're probably leaving the club you've spent your entire going life at, you've just come down from breakfast and someone is sticking a camera on you while you try to sign a shirt and pulling that stunt.

Fair points. It's not just American influence. But basically it's the money man isn't it.

Watching the Keegan stuff just brought home how the game has been stolen basically.
