His comms team certainly are more effective/intouch than Starmer.
It doesn't solve the problem, Tories didn't build prison places when they needed to and now Labour have to deal with it.
But the optics for Burnham are better. Most of the general public will not care about overcrowding, but will care about certain criminals being released early. |  | | |  |

I don't agree with the action, but the optics are certainly good and will probably be appreciated by a lot of people.
Far too many people are imprisoned for whom alternative punishments would be just as effective or better. We don't need more prison places - we need far more progressive means of punishment and rehabilitation. |  |

The release scheme was releasing murderers, rapists etc though which I guess was his biggest optics issue.

Agree - but needs to be careful that the action / response / message is appropriate and he doesn't become just seen a people pleaser as he will get found out quickly.
This scenario is a great example - an obvious public concern, so he has paused while more is investigated - very sensible. Next test is what is the outcome of the investigation.
Starmer always seemed slower to react, but that is almost certainly as a result of being a barrister who are very traditionally risk averse and overthink every outcome of decisions - Burnham seems a little more dynamic.
I am not hugely familiar with their deeper political views, but I feel that Burnham and Starmer may not be that far apart, but communication style and approach to decision making could be a marked change. |  | | |

It is perhaps ironic that his involvement in the scheme, presumably done in part to make the matter less controversial and party political, has completely failed in that sense.
Interestingly, the General Secretary of the Prison Officers Association said last night that there are 19,000 remand prisoners, evidence of a complete failure of the criminal justice system with delayed trials and the like. He went on to say that there may be some categories of remand prisoners who could be released to ease pressures, subject of course to appropriate bail conditions. [Post edited 24 Jul 8:30]

I would also change the punishment for white collar crime. What is the point of locking up Peter Murrell for five years? He isn't a danger to society.
Obviously people like him should be punished but I would restrict his movements at certain hours and make him do community work for five years instead. Cle the streets, Help in the community etc.
I appreciate his sentence is also a deterrent but do these people really think they will get caught in the first place? Somebody will probably put up a far more convincing case to counter my argument. | |

That sound sensible to me, and perhaps is the sort of thing they do in western European countries, all of which have lower incarceration rates than us.

This, background to the Sentencing Bill, suggests foreign nationals can be removed regardless of their right to be here.
"The Independent Sentencing Review (ISR) recommended facilitating earlier removal of Foreign National Offenders (FNOs). The ISR assessed deportation is in itself a significant punishment, and it is beneficial to deport FNOs as early as possible into their sentence to protect the public, reduce pressures on prison capacity and mitigate the associated expense to the taxpayer.
There were 10,772 FNOs in prison on 30 June 2025, representing 12% of the total prison population. 3,781 of these are on remand and not eligible for deportation. In the last 12 months, over 5,000 FNOs have been returned which is 14% higher than in the same period 12 months prior. Of these returns, over 2,500 were Early Removal Scheme returns.
This Sentencing Bill measure will allow FNOs in prison to be eligible for removal for the purpose of immediate deportation at any point after sentencing, allowing for deportations to happen earlier." [Post edited 24 Jul 9:21]
