| Woah Big Brother! (Pros and cons of being internationally relevant) 23:53 - Aug 4 with 1768 views | Swansea_Blue | There was room for some interesting discussion there (imo of course). I’m not going to re-type my reply on my tiny phone screen for it only to get deleted again, but here’s my headline. There’s room for an interesting discussion on how we manage the contradiction between people saying we need to protect football for ‘real’ fans against the assault of tourist football and the obvious benefits of having international superstars and the interest they generate. The example tonight raised by the OP was too critical imo, and there were good counter posts showing how wholesome the support was (dad/kids/support for new player, etc). But that doesn’t mean there aren’t frictions in the game regarding tourist fans that we will likely encounter this year. This stuff’s all over football media so we can’t just bury it and pretend it isn’t a talking point. (I said it better the first time). [Post edited 4 Aug 23:58]

No ding dongs on it, so presumably just inappropriate. It wasn’t exactly welcoming, but I thought it was salvageable. Ah well.

Seemed like racism to me which is why I guess it had -10 down votes last time I saw it. Didn't see when it got deleted though. Bit of a ridiculous point to make when it was a friendly with loads of tickets going spare. SB

Yeah, you’ve put it far more eloquently in your OP than I did last night. I see I’ve already been accused of racism for raising concerns about tourist fans at games which drives up prices & make football too expensive for real fans. Classic TWTD. [Post edited 5 Aug 8:18]

Yes it’s only a friendly but it will creep into league games too. Racism? Hahahahah

It's incredibly hard to get tickets for league games without all the right memberships or a season ticket. Why would it be easier for tourists to get tickets? Why was it deleted then? It might not have been the intention but it must have come across like that to someone who must have reported it. SB [Post edited 5 Aug 8:12]

It was definitely a clumsy OP in light of the reality that I think it was Melford pointed out. To frame it as racist would be disingenuous. Maybe the thread was deemed insensitive particularly as we are supposedly interested in Maeda's international compatriot. I imagine that marketing possibilities feature strongly in deciding who to throw money at at this level. Appealing to 'tourist' fans who will splash out on expensive packages is definitely a thing!!

You'll have to ask Phil why he deleted it. There was no need to mention any nationality in the post, the same points could have been made without it. It was certainly clumsy at best. SB

| Woah Big Brother! (Pros and cons of being internationally relevant) on 09:35 - Aug 5 with 879 views | You_Bloo_Right | Football has changed and football support has changed - in the EPL even more so. There are a significant number of younger supporters who follow players rather than specific teams and will move to watch/follow their team as their chosen player does. The so-called "tourist" fan may be a variation of this but from a club's point of view such fans usually represent a greater income stream. This may be a relatively new phenomenon as far as Town are concerned but that push to maximise in-stadium revenue has hardly been disguised even here. As Stokie has said though, "walk-up" fans ("tourist" or otherwise) must satisfy certain criteria before getting close to buying a ticket. Of course there is always the corporate option but at roughly 10 times a "normal" match day ticket I imagine that's not the sort of fan you had in mind. As ever when we discuss "real" fans my mind drifts all the way back to the 21-22 season (average attendance just shy of 22K) when the ticket office were able to accommodate my request to move from SBR Upper to Cobbold Block A (don't slip on beer soaked floors and b*gger up both knees thus making steep stairs an issue - especially when at an age when one should know better). I was row L and virtually every seat behind me (and many in front) was empty; most of these seats were available as STs. That was a mere 5 years ago. The following season my BiL was able to purchase the seat next to me as a ST. Now I appreciate that, even with what I feel is a very good DD scheme for ST purchase, STs are not always viable for some. And of course there is the "future generations" argument to factor in. Nevertheless I think in any discussion of "tourist" over "real" fan an important point is, how many "real" fans are missing out now? Where were these "real" fans 5 years ago? The unstated but related point about certain fan demographics being priced out of the game is a wider issue for me than the advent of the "tourist" fan. So whilst I didn't report the original post, as I implied in my reply what got to me was the singling out of one particular player from one particular nation as we are, and have been for some time, a multi-national team. It also grated as the ITFC fans I really grew up with were renowned for their multi-cultural tolerance. Then again, I am a (but not "the") particularly old git. Whilst none of that racial aspect may have been the intention of the OP it was no surprise to see the thread gone. | |

I saw it and it was obviously not racist, but was very unwelcoming to a whole set of potential fans. This whole “real football supporter” is utter nonsense, reminds me of the noise around oasis tickets when a subset of 40/50 year olds were moaning about those younger fans getting tickets. Keep being told football is a game for the fans, but apparently only some fans.

We have around 21k season ticket holders and the stadium capacity is 30k. Take away the away fans then that’ll leave around 6k tickets for fans to fight over, of which the vast majority will go to those with membership. As you say, the chances of ‘tourists’ getting hold of home tickets is slight. If the capacity increases to 35k then those chances go up and definitely so of it increases to 40k. Saying that if we are regularly filling up a 40k stadium then that’ll prove that the team will be very well indeed - swings and roundabouts and all that.

As an aside, Mark Heath said on one of the KOA videos that he had posted a clip about Maeda on social media and it had attracted half a million views. I suppose there is something there to be monetised even if only in shirt sales or perhaps increased views of TWTD, KOA or Blue Monday. [Post edited 5 Aug 11:13]

I don’t believe it was racist or there was any racist intent behind your post. I downvoted it because I thought it was unwelcoming and a bit daft as we could have done with a few more tourists last night to fill the ground. Tourism won’t have any effect on supporters getting tickets. We have a strict membership policy. Anyway, it turned out that they weren’t Japanese tourists but locals bringing a Japan flag to make Maeda feel welcome. Not sure why the thread was pulled. [Post edited 5 Aug 11:57]

I replied to you last night and whilst I didn’t think your post was racist, I can see how it could be viewed as borderline though as it was incredibly backward and came with a massive amount of assumption about some fans at the game. My issue was with how little respect you showed other fans that came to watch us. It wasn’t a case of ‘Classic TWTD’, I don’t think racism was even mentioned last night. The replies I saw were pointing out that your views weren’t shared by the majority and actually did open the discussion about global fans.

| Woah Big Brother! (Pros and cons of being internationally relevant) on 12:56 - Aug 5 with 376 views | Swansea_Blue | I thought it would be interesting. I don’t like to see us calling out people who are at FPR. It goes to the heart of who we are imo - we’ve always been a bit of a sleepy but welcoming club. The point about ‘real fans’ (as I see it those would be people who go games to support us, not those who have no interest in us) is that fans of larger clubs than us are creating a bit of noise now about how it affects them with things like changes in atmosphere, contribution to increased ticket prices, etc. there’s loads of stuff on FSA website & overview in the Leftie Paper: https://thefsa.org.uk/news/cat https://www.theguardian.com/wo Can anyone say that they think the Corporate England section at Wembley adds anything when it’s in a prime spot and half empty for parts of the game, for example? That’s a very visual representation of the issue. But we also want to welcome new fans, be that youngsters or a ST holder who would like to bring a mate for their first trip to FPR or locals/tourists who want to support a new player and who could end up becoming ‘real fans’. Everyone had their first trip to FPR and we should want that to be a welcoming experience. | |
