10 wins! TEN WINS!! 20:58 - Aug 11 with 2211 viewsunstableblue

From some of the earlier threads on how we’ll get to 40 points, what really stood out for me is that in reality we’ll require at least 10 wins (maybe more) and a number of draws to achieve that points tally.

We got 4 wins last time out. Another 6 to be achieved.

Carving 3 points out against Sunderland on that first game in front of a rabid atmosphere would really set us on the path.

40 points is doable, but for it to be realistic I reckon we will need to beat Sunderland and then get a draw against either Man United or Liverpool to give us some momentum early on in the season.

Rather get the points on the board early so it eases pressure plus it could leave us with a decent enough gap from the drop zone.

10 and 10 would have got a team home every year in recent history (15 seasons or more). Some seasons very comfortably.

Although it’s just another way of saying 40 points.

However, it’s ultimately about doing better than 3 other teams. 3 other clubs with really poor performances, and 30 could get us over the line.

Much as last season, the key will be to compare our results with other teams that look to be in the relegation battle after the table begins to take shape.

Grundisburger - couldn’t agree more.

Only way we survive is with early season momentum.

Saw a suggestion we could grow into the season.

But the Town fan base will want/need the new manager to hit the ground running, and we need to make Portman Road really intimidating to give us an edge.

If we start losing and the dire atmosphere of last season returns to Portman Road we’ll struggle.

The other two promoted teams have equally tricky starts to ourselves (including playing each other). I don't think we're going to fall that far behind initially. The second phase will be very important, where we are up to about the end of November. That will hopefully give us a platform to work from.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I would love us to hit the ground running and build momentum from day 1. Looking at the path to 40 we will need points day 1 and to not allow many teams to take points away from PR. However we need to be realistic in the face of significant changes this summer, manager, coaches, players coming and going, to expect that all to come together for Sunderland is unlikely but definitely desired.

Make your home a fortress of noise and partisan cheers and boos. Make it a fortress and not lose at home. Thats how you stay up. Also big up Grundisburgh!! Used to live in Burgh and had a mate in Grundisburgh one of the Reeds

I was going to challenge this, but having thought about it, given we got 4 wins and 10 draws last time, our minimum goal is to shift a number of those draws in equivalent games into the win column, whilst replacing them with draws coming from last time's loss column.

Indeed, 6 draws becoming wins and 6 losses becoming draws gives us 10 wins and 10 draws for 40 points. Nice.

Effectively all we're looking for in terms of improvement is one more goal in our favour (for or against) in 12 equivalent games to shift the results enough.

Detail:
We had 5 home defeats and 3 away defeats by one goal.
- one more goal scored or one fewer conceded in 6 of those 8 gets us the extra draws.
We had 4 home draws and 6 away draws.
- one more goal scored or one fewer conceded in 6 of those 10 gets us the extra wins.

For example, 6 better defensive actions, plus 6 better finishes over the course of the whole season gets us there.

12 little moments over the course of the season, from what looks set to be our significantly superior squad compared to last time.

But I think we'll do a bit better than that.

Believe. I mean, really believe.

A lot of people may be disappointed after the Sunderland match. They finished 8th? Would love us to beat them but it's a tough ask.

Good post

Yes West Ham and saints away, and indeed Fulham away, and palace, saints, Leicester, Fulham and Villa at home… frankly all of these could have been flipped to a win!

Not much love for Leeds on here, and that's entirely fair enough. But I can't see us beating them twice. Imagine a world in which we could finish 14th and then add the likes of Trafford and Harry Wilson. Nothing wrong with a bit of optimism, but on an objective basis I struggle to see it.

Didn't they finish above Brighton in 7th in the end?

Your point is a good one.

Sunderlands main strength is their manager. I think we need a win will need to take it to them and score multiple goals
