Today is the day that online folk think that something very weird will happen. Apparently at 15:33 today the earth gravity is going to stop for seven seconds and everything will float up. Once it has finished everything crashes back down.

I am confused. Some flat earthers believe that gravity is a 'theory' and the universe is actually just rising rapidly through space. Have they accepted gravity now of is this an elite branch of the loons?

I'm interested in how gravity is going to 'disengage' (presumably pretty much instantaneously) for 7 seconds, then start again. What is the mechanic for this happening?

I know gravity is an area where we still have a lot to understand, but this is, so far as I'm aware, an event unprecedented in the entire history of the known universe. For gravity to just "stop", for no apparent reason, then to start again. It's not like a machine which can suffer a power interruption, it's a basic principle of physics.

Besides which, their casualty figures are way out. Everyone would die. There would be no walls or ceilings to slam into. The planet would, at least temporarily, disintegrate. The atmosphere would go, too. At best, there would be a molten blob left afterwards, with billions of tons of debris plunging back into the surface.

I've thought, since I was a kid, that it would make a cool movie if the gravity turned off.

But yeah, it's batsh!t nonsense. I read on Quora that it's flat earthers who reckon the earth will flip, like a pancake.


I wouldn't call it "batsh!t nonsense" just yet in case it happens. Then you'd end up with egg on your face............
