Odd event predicted today (rumour mill) 09:05 - Aug 12 with 3454 viewsRIPbobby

Today is the day that online folk think that something very weird will happen. Apparently at 15:33 today the earth gravity is going to stop for seven seconds and everything will float up. Once it has finished everything crashes back down.

I hope you all keep well. Lol

That serious organisations have to spend time and money publicly debunking this nonsense is a really sad indictment of where some elements of some societies have got to.

On a serious note, I haven't even recovered my chair cover that was lost in a storm a few months back - I'll never get all the house and garden contents that will have gone hundreds of feet in the air back when this happens.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

The thing I find amusing is that these sort of things always seem to be on August 12th. I wonder why that is?

Lots of significant stuff happened in 1533 - the English Reformation got underway and Queen Elizabeth I was born.

Tho gravity didn't yet exist, Sir Isaac Newton not having invented it for another 154 years.

That would eclipse the eclipse. Don't forget the meteor shower later on too. If we're still alive to see it.

You won't need to tie yourself down, just don't jump during those 7 seconds.

You might need a bit more than rope. Gravity is literally the only thing holding the planet (and, indeed, the universe) together.

I'd love to see the explanation of how the physics of that works. And why it should be so localised as to only happen on Earth.

Excellent!

I'm going to get three different uses out of my colander today.

1) Strain my food
2) Wear as a crash helmet for when I slam into the ceiling
3) Project the eclipse onto a paper plate

Get in!!!!

I'm interested in how gravity is going to 'disengage' (presumably pretty much instantaneously) for 7 seconds, then start again. What is the mechanic for this happening?

I know gravity is an area where we still have a lot to understand, but this is, so far as I'm aware, an event unprecedented in the entire history of the known universe. For gravity to just "stop", for no apparent reason, then to start again. It's not like a machine which can suffer a power interruption, it's a basic principle of physics.

Besides which, their casualty figures are way out. Everyone would die. There would be no walls or ceilings to slam into. The planet would, at least temporarily, disintegrate. The atmosphere would go, too. At best, there would be a molten blob left afterwards, with billions of tons of debris plunging back into the surface.

I've thought, since I was a kid, that it would make a cool movie if the gravity turned off.

But yeah, it's batsh!t nonsense. I read on Quora that it's flat earthers who reckon the earth will flip, like a pancake.

NASA are going to turn it off and on again. it just takes a few seconds to reboot.
