My first Town game!

Poll: The career progress of former town players is...

The Whymark Mariner 1 2 goal is one of the best Ipswich goals ever, got to be top 5.

Imagine if that was scored today by Liverpool or City, they would show it on sky sports every 5 minutes

King of the board since 98

One of my favourite town goals

Stood on the north stand that afternoon and ducked when Beattie shot, it was going like rocket

Absolutely on fire that day, perfect examples in there of why so many of us wax lyrical about that era, Beattie, Whymark, Woods, Osborne and that Hunter tackle before the last goal! WBA deserved it anyway turned out in those colours!

Oh to see Beattie playing in the modern game!

Not sure how long Big Al would last tho

Thanks for putting that up.
Those that can remember the match. I bet they can name every Town player there still.

Big Al would do just fine. When he’d been let out of jail. He was as tough as old boots but a top player. More skilful than he looked, he rarely gave the ball away or made mistakes - apart from punching the ball out of the penalty area in a certain FA Cup semi final in 1978. The top forwards of the day rarely got any change out of him and he was the perfect partner for the great Kevin Beattie.

In the modern game, the only thing that’d count against Hunter is height. He was 6ft. Tall for the day, not now.

What a team that was. One of the best matches I ever saw a Robson team play. They smashed WBA who were not a bad side. Underrated player? Whymark. Remembered as good in the air, he was one heck of an all round footballer. As for Mariner, it was clear we’d signed an absolute beast of a centre forward. He had the lot.

Osborne had to be up there as being underrated as well

Cruff reckoned he was hardest opponent he’d played against

I was at that game, as an 8 year old little scamp standing on my milk crate! Had to get to the ground at around 1pm if you wanted a decent spot with your crater against the wall back then!
