Gary has commented a lot on not wanting to lose what was here before what building on it.
That's tactically (he's kept much of KM style whilst adding to it) and culturally (he referenced the old training centre and Dara keeping the culture going).
It's Gary's work but today wouldn't haven't happened without KM either.

Exactly, no doubt the foundations have been laid by KM, now it's G O'N's turn, to build on them and if you like, run with the baton. He's made a sound start. He won't be fooled, much to do, but he must need a lie down in a darkened room for at least a few hours after everything he's been involved with since he's been here. Tactically he's playing the same formation he played at his last three clubs. He clearly has different patterns and ethos to McKenna.
I didn't say today wouldn't have happened without McKenna. I pushed back on "This is all down to what went before."
It isn't, and I find is somewhat disrespectful. He's recruited very well, he's clearly trained the team very well, he deserves his own credit for today's victory. We don't need to put a McKenna asterisk over his successes. | |

He's said it himself - we have kept some of the style of play. Leif high, the back three rolling around, etc. But he's absolutely added good own patterns and principles too, you're right.
No need for an asterisk. But I think GON has been astute in recognising what he wants to keep whilst building his own team.

It goes beyond that. The work is from the ownership downwards and throughout the football club. This was referred to I think by McKenna at the end of last season and is right.
You only have to look at Brentford and Brighton to see that unlike the days of Bobby Robson and later GB, who did everything, the team manager is part of something bigger. Still the lynchpin mind.
GON has made a good start. Better than I’d hoped, tbh. I do get a sense of continuity from KMs time, but maybe that is wishful thinking and happiness after a good result. One thing is for sure - the platers enjoyed it and each others’ company which was nice to see. |  | | |
