Just a great result yesterday and in many aspects a great performance. Sunderland errors gave us opportunities and we were ruthless. We weathered Sunderland’s attacks pretty well, and their physical striker. When the Black Cats clicked into rhythm we allowed them to play in non dangerous areas. And our pressing trap was sprung a number of times.
The energy of our front 4 was a difference maker, a lot of tenacity and aggression especially from Maeda and Fatawu.
Now we head to Old Traffford, and we are likely to meet a backlash I’m afraid, following their humiliation at Hull. Press are calling out a lack of fight and desire and passion from the United players - with Carrick getting tetchy about those accusations.
This will be turned into a motivation - and the home fans will try and get them going early. We’ve got to weather the storm but also put doubt in the home fans and players with some threat.
So balancing going deep to frustrate, but also going forward at pace with numbers.
What was very encouraging about the Sunderland home game is how many players we were getting in the box when we did go at them. We won’t be that front foot forward away at United.
I assume Florentino will be fit. And I wonder if we’ll see the much vaunted - yet not seen - 5 at the back? With Ouatarra and Davis as wing backs. And Fatawu and Enciso behind Emersonn.

My mantra for any match in the PL is, respect for the opposition? For sure. Fear? Not on your life! It's a football match, fear should have nothing to do with it. Play your game, if you're good enough you'll get at least a draw, if you're not, you won't. The side needs to be set up on a match by match basis. I'll leave that to G O'N, he's a tad more qualified than me! That goes for Hull, or Arsenal. |  | | |

Hull won that game by being more physical and winning more aerial and ground duels all over the park. Two set piece goals gave them something to fight for.
United looked like they didn't want the physical battle as much compared to Hull.
I would not change much from Saturday - stay in the same formation and probably more or the less the same 11, but the message I would be getting across is emphasising the importance of winning the battles all over the park.
Old Trafford is a different atmosphere to the MKM stadium though. |  |

I'd quite like to see that three at the back, as you say with Davis and Ouatarra as wing backs. Not that I think it's necessarily the way to go, but that I'd like to see us demonstrate our flexibility early.
Might by Enciso and Maeda, rather than Enciso and Fatawu, I think, in a narrower and more defence minded two. I must admit I'm not sure that Maeda is more defence minded, but he looks to be more suited to a narrower position, and his much vaunted work rate might be crucial (although Fatawu's work rate looks super high too! - embarrassment of riches!) |  |

I think Maeda is up there with the best 'defensive' forwards in the league for pressing. A Celtic-supporting pal basically said he blows hot and cold on the ball but he's incredible off it. So I'd imagine he'll start all tough away days. |  | | |

Not sure what the plan will be but I imagine solid at the back and rapid on attack deals with Utd quite well.
For a club that has spent the riches they have, they have an embarrassing lack of quality CDMs and CBs (compared to similar spenders: Arsenal, City, PSG). Obviously Tielemans is quality and would be welcome in a Town shirt but compared to Rice, Anderson or Vitinha he is not a deep holding player. I think you’ve nailed that for the seasons of spending they have their CBs and CMs just not at the level of their peers.
Obviously the new guy from Brighton will improve them, but he’s injured.

Genuinely don't think any of their backline par Mazroui can handle Emersonn which is a bit worrying when you consider the quality of forwards other clubs have to offer.
Their spending and whomever is responsible for it the last two seasons is miles above where it was previously. They seemed to lack any clue until last season.
Cunha and Mbeumo were insanely solid pick ups for attack and whilst Sesko is immensely talented I really do question the mentality of someone who chose that Man U team and slightly more money over Arsenal. Is 20 grand a week seriously that necessary when you can purchase the average persons in the UK entire life and capital in 2 months of your wages. Seems a bit excessive when you kick a ball and when the difference is a top UCL and Prem Contender Vs a team who lose to Hull in their first match. Also he doesn't even start above Cunha whom whilst he is a quality finisher is not a striker so jury still out for Sesko.
Like you said Baleba and Tielemans show that alongside Ugarte they are starting a serious rebuild in midfield now and can start to think about playing at the top again. Not top European levels though.
Lastly you look at defence and you just have to sigh. Lammens was a smart pick up and yet he probably still ranks somewhere mid table in a list of Prem GK. De Gea still playing and likely still on par as a keeper.
Dorgu is a good player but for what system. Mazroui great. De Ligt can do it on his day but they seriously don't have one elite CB amongst the lot. Which for what they've spent is embarrassing. Arsenal seal Konsa as a back up CB and Man U don't even think about competing for the signature.
Overall verdict. Stadium falling down, lunch ladies and soul of the club sold. They are there for the taking every match to have the pants pulled down. Think Town can do it with GON and this squad and all we need is the first goal and to defend the next 10 minutes for the old faithful to turn toxic and start jeering their own players second match into the season.
