| I really rate Stuart Watson 18:31 - Aug 25 with 4614 views | Cheltenham_Blue | he's been a great journalist covering Town over the years, and the same with the rest of the EADT. But has anyone else found the content has been overly speculative for a while now? Maybe the club has changed their relationship with the media in someway? | |

You’re gonna have to elaborate on that assertion - seems particularly unfair considering how well Watson and co dealt with Ashton inviting Farage to lunch. That certainly wasn’t ’the club line’

I'd say he got there in the end. The Athletic were the ones doing the heavy lifting. But my point was nothing personal really. Very few people want to pay for journalism now, whereas when I was young, many years ago, almost every household had a newspaper of some sort, and every workplace. How much proper investigative journalism do you see in local newspapers today?

After their criticism of the Farage visit, i really don't see how that would be the case

Some of the national and international media seem to have more idea regarding transfers like Nikko and Romano and then Stu reports it putting his spin on it. He only comments on transfers on KOA when Alex isn’t available. He’s been at EADT since 2006 and became chief football writer in 2011, maybe he needs to move on to the big time and get a job with a national newspaper or tv broadcaster.

I'm going to assume you didn't watch the podcast where KOA forensically picked it apart. As I've said in another post in the thread, journalism has changed profoundly in the last two decades - Kings of Anglia is an example of legacy media adapting.

I'm saying it would have never got that far if the Athletic hadn't been on the case.

Which is an irrelevancy to the point being discussed - you asserted that Watson is essentially defacto club media, he isn't, it's quite the opposite, as shown by his coverage of the Ashton debacle (which, yes, included his opinion and assessment of the work done by the Atheltic) So again, can you explain to me how and why Watson is basicially an extension of the clubs media arm?
| I really rate Stuart Watson on 10:46 - Aug 26 with 258 views | iamipswich | Think Stu is great and writes extremely well. He's perhaps a little cautious on transfers which by his own admission are not his favourite part of the job (but are undeniably a huge part of modern journalism). Think Mark is a good host who brings a balance of maturity and boyish excitement which I enjoy personally. He also threads things together nicely, knowing his limits in terms of full-blown analysis. I think AJ is a good addition who has a great knowledge and enthusiasm for the game and while he's a downgrade in terms of sense of humour compared with Andy, he makes up for it with his knowledge. Think he brings a good energy to the group still. Ross is clearly a very nice guy and others can I'm sure confirm a sound photographer but he really shouldn't be on the pod. The ineloquence and general lack of direction when speaking loses the pod credibility and he should stick to fan engagement where it can be less formal. | |

Well I didn't say that I thought that, I said that the cynically-minded might. As I say, I have nothing at all against SW, and as you suggest, he fits into the new way of the world. (At Colchester, David Gregory both works for the club and does commentary for the BBC on the club, and I have got used to that.) But SW has the best interests of the club at heart. He cares about the club, its supporters and the town. He wants the club to be successful. Meanwhile, the Athletic don't care if Town are promoted rather than, say, Southampton. If there's dirt to be dug, they're more likely to dig it, if they think the story is interesting enough to the football world in general. There's quite probably someone at the Southampton Gazette who heard a whisper that Saints did a little hiding in bushes or dressing up in Eastleigh kit, but they weren't going to publish the fact on their back page.
