Interesting to hear Egeli specifically call out Akpom as having been brilliant last two months.
Such a shame he couldn't put a finish away as his performance was good last night with slightly limited service. If he scores the one on one we all say it was a really good overall performance from him. Those are the fine margins.
Difference for me is you can see how much he wants it. He's out powering defenders which he wasn't last season. Gutted for him. If you watch the goals he is instrumental in two. Good move where Leif laid one back to him but I was such a slow pass the he had to wait for it. Those little things because a yard sooner to him and he scores as the defender doesn't get there.
Ultimately he has to relax a bit and find finishing touch to get the games but I credit his efforts last night. Hope he keeps giving it everything. |  |

I agree. The lad has clearly been really professional and worked his socks off to get fit and be ready. He's been the opposite of lazy. Full credit to him for that, and of course it would be lovely if he were to succeed. I don't think he was used to best effect last season. Him or Egeli for that matter.
But at the end of the day, and especially in the PL, strikers just simply have to take their chances or the team will be punished. You have to score when you are on top. That is true in the Champ, and we somehow got away with Azon and Hirst missing too many big chances last year, not least because of a rock solid defence and reliable keeper. But it's even more true in the PL. It's very fashionable to show that you understand the other aspects of a lone striker's role, and of course those aspects are important especially in this system. But a number 9 has to convert a reasonable number of chances. If Delap had been less clinical, we would have been down by Xmas.
Missing sitters against league one opposition is not a good advert for Akpom's services. Having a decent pre-season does not convert someone whom very few of us would have /chosen/ to purchase into someone whom we're suddenly pleased we were forced to buy. Everyone is allowed one bad game, but I'm not sure this performance will have made GON any less keen to add to our striking options, and when he does, Akpom will be third choice at best. |  | | |

Apart from that one season at Middlesborough he has never actually scored many throughout his career. Did OK at Ajax which I guess got him a move to us via the obligation to buy route which let's face it in this instance has backfired on us. | | | |

I agree that you need to be clinical in the Premiership. But it is not correct to say we would have been down by Christmas without Delap. His goals contributed to 4 points for us before Christmas. | | | |

Akpom's best qualities last night were being strong on the ball, turning defenders, holding it up and bringing others into the game - all good for a number 9. Additionally he has always had a good touch in receiving a ball. The downside was he didn't finish well and he didn't have a striker's instinct for example when Davis knocked that ball into him to put away.
The problem is that he was playing against a couple of young League One right-backs at centre-back. Is he going to be able to replicate those positive aspects against premier league centre-backs. I seriously doubt that. I don't think there is much he can bring that is going to trouble anyone. He's fine as a third striker but not as a second one playing in every match.
