My relatively small town (40,000 population) had two large Poundlands and a Poundstretche on its small High Street a couple of years ago but the last of them recently closed.
I do feel their thunder has been stolen by B&M and Home Bargains. [Post edited 27 Aug 16:27]

Still got a Poundland in Cheltenham, which still seems fairly busy on the rare occasions that I go into town. I think it is probably supported by a large student population close by.
But yes, the Home Bargains and the B&M which are out of town always seem packed out. | |

To be fair some people may want to spread cost of Christmas while they have some cash etc and put things away as they may not be good at saving the money.
