The Serbian government seem like a nice bunch 22:53 - Aug 27 with 2528 viewsDubtractor

Serbia’s Justice Minister announces that genocidaire Ratko Mladic will be buried in the country with the highest state honors. It’s good that the Serbian government is doing this, so everyone can finally see the true, monstrous face of the Vucic regime. No illusions. www.klix.ba/vijesti/bih/...

Please do not relate Serbian people to this nationalistic autocratic criminal government which we've been trying to remove from power for years. Unfortunately, EU and Trump both seem to have a lot of use from them since everything is allowed to Vucic and his criminals

I did make a point of saying 'Serbian government' in my title with that in mind.

Thank you for this post.

My view is that in many places, the people that run countries are not often a reflection of the people. Most people just want to get on with their lives, but few of those that seek and hold power are there for anything but themselves.

Autocrats, dictators etc are little, hollowed out people. They live in fear and protect themselves by crushing others home and abroad. Just look at Putin and best mate Trump.

I never see a people as a reflection of their leaders.

In the nature of nationalism this stuff. Plenty of war criminals and genocidaires celebrated in our country in various ways.

Indeed, but it’s an interesting thread - let’s not make it about Tony Blair.

I’m half way through Shadowplay by Tim Marshall as it happens and every time I revisit that conflict it blows me away. Well worth a read like his other books if you ask me.

Serbia is one part of the former Yugoslavia I’ve not visited yet and I am always torn on going because like everywhere, I’ve met Serbs in the other nations who were great people but the government itself seems horrendous still.

It’s so alien to us that they’d hail this bloke and celebrate him but doesn’t surprise me either

Just people from Norfolk we have to worry about.

No tbh, skipped through it now you posted it, you should compare this with his loc and even regional interviews and rhetorics. I mean this guy was Milosevic's minister of communications, half of his party and government are from Milosevic's regime. Of course they will hail Mladic as war hero.

hard not to bearing in mind plenty voted for him and presumably share his opinions. 48% of the vote represents a lot of people. Was it a fair and legal election ?

I assume the subtitles are the Romanised version of the Cyrillic Serbian language.

I visited various areas of what was then Yugoslavia 45 years ago, and couldn't understand any of the destinations on the railway signs at Belgrade railway station because they were in Cyrillic which made catching the right train a problem.

Tito had not long died, and his photo was pretty common in shops and the like, which suggested to me that he was pretty popular.

I certainly didn't see any evidence of the ethnic tensions which were later to emerge, visiting in addition to Belgrade places like Sarajevo, Dubrovnic, Split, Zagreb and Ljubljana.

Finally, Yugoslavia appeared the most open and prosperous of all the Communist countries I visited on Inter Rail around that time, and even Coca Cola was freely available.

It is literally the most ilegal and fraudulent election system in Europe, maybe even wider. Hundreds of evidences all brought up before European commission about voting lists being illicit and duplicated, deceased voters, people paid to vote, even people from surrounding countries being issued Serbian IDs so they can vote after being transported in buses to Serbia etc. etc. etc. Shouldn't be hard to find online even in english a lot about elections in Serbia. Not to mention arrests and beatings of the journalists, opposition politicians and protesters. I wrote even here on the forum about it a couple of times. Half a million people were protesting last year when they used the sound cannons to disperse us, I was there when human stampede ensued and by pure luck no one died, people ended with only injuries.

Oh, btw, 48% is with all that manipulation from 51% election turnout which is constitutional minimum. Constitution being the only law more or less these people didn't manage to change yet, since they changed more than 100 laws. They once adopted 63 new laws in a single week. His brother is connected directly to organized crime and drug trafficking etc. I apologize, rant over... COYB

Please don’t apologise. It’s interesting and informative. Most of all it’s a warning and a lesson.

Greed, corruption, manipulation, control by those who seek control and power can happen anywhere. History is littered with it let alone the present. You only have to look at where a country like America that was thought to be above all that is heading.

Indeed, a bit like the West Ham fans who hail The Kray Twins because they always looked after their Mum, although a thousand times worse in terms of the numbers.

On a side note, when I visited the War Museum in Narvik there was a small display about a genocide I was completely unaware of. The Nazis shipped seven thousand Yugoslav men inside the Arctic Circle and there the Norwegian Nazi camp commanders (whom the SS refused to work with on account of their extreme brutality) told their prisoners that they were there to work until they died. And most did. Crime knows no boundaries or borders.

Thanks for your reply, it is very interesting to read. Sounds a very scary incident with the sound cannons.
