I don’t mean a free transfer from the League of Ireland that didn’t cut it. I’m talking about a player with some hype around them and that you were really excited when they signed that ended up being a let down?
Lots to choose from but I’ll go for Adrian Paz (although that was after I’d got over the disappointment of it not being Batistuta as initially reported). For the first few games he got a free pass as he was settling in but it then became increasingly clear he either just wasn’t that good or at least he wasn’t right for us. He had a few good moments but not enough. Thankfully Taricco who came with him more than made up for it eventually. |  |

Nabil Abidallah came and played at Fc Clacton years ago - he was awful at that level.
My two major disappointments were Paul Taylor (there used to be a drunk in Colchester Wetherspoons who looked like him - nasty little weasel-faced prick) and here's one you've all forgotten - Jon Nolan. I thought he'd be the key in our midfield but he looked well out of his depth and then stayed injured. |  |

This thread has reminded me of some absolute classic TWTDisms over the years where a small but substantial percentage of the board has become convinced that some random player was going to be the next big thing.
Jonathan Parr being "an upgrade on Tyrone Mings" was a personal favourite.
Although he never signed, Curtis "Like Sh1ttu with the footwork of JET" Tilt is one I will still be laughing about in 30 years.
Jonathan Douglas going from being a great free agent signing who was exactly what we needed to looking like he didn't even know he was on a football pitch was a good one.
Scott Fraser and Kyle Edwards another two honourable mentions for the sheer amount of hype they generated. |

He joined us from the Ajax youth academy, so there was some hope. He eas underage for Netherlands. Made 2 appearances for us. It was 2000 and he stayed fir 4 years, so a bit more than 15 years ago. Went out on loan to Northampton and then to Clackton Town and then a few lower than them. Finished in Italian 3rd division in 2009.
According to the Internet, he was arrested for breaking into his former rented house in 2006 which he had been evicted from for non payment of rent. | | | |

His time at Wigan was magnificent, his time afterwards had got progressively worse but I forgot all that and was looking forward to the Wigan player. By the time we got him he was hopeless, lacked energy, couldn't score and I am not sure he even wanted to play football anymore. Just cack. |

A really good shout that. He'd been good for Reading, played loads of games when Reading were actually quite good for 5 mins, had been captain. Even at 34 he seemed like a solid, battle hardened, experienced reader of the game that would add leadership to our backline. I genuinely thought that we'd made a sensible just what we need signing.
He was shot, we got 8 games.

Surprised no mention yet for Finidi George - looked to be the final jigsaw piece to take us on, ended up being a one game wonder who aged rapidly before our eyes (whatever age he was supposed to be) |
One game wonder is just nonsense. Finidi scored 7 goals for us that season and was a key part in our midseason revival which made us all think we we would be fine. We badly missed him when he left for the Africa Cup of nations, then the season just went downhill. Not helped by Burley deciding to play and then stick with the awful Andy Marshall in goal. [Post edited 29 Aug 13:33]
