| The Falklands 12:26 - Sep 4 with 1969 views | BelsteadCav | A lot of sabre rattling by Argentina this morning, especially now as it looks like Trump is getting involved. Our Armed forces are in a mess at the moment, the government have even cancelled training, trying to save 30m, which is a drop in the ocean. If we can’t spend 30m on training we are in a lot of trouble. I know Argentina are in a worse state than us, but would Trump give them weapons and planes? Because after all, he loves oil and it looks like we’ve found a massive oil field out there. I know we have 4 Euro fighters down there, and over a 1000 soldiers, but it’s still a worry. We definitely couldn’t get a task force ready, every single submarine we have is in fas lane at the moment for repairs. Same for most of the navy. Worrying times, but hey are new Prime minister likes oasis [Post edited 4 Sep 13:20]

Tory labour same thing, The Uni party wants us back in the EU ( I know most of the board wouldn’t mind that ) and the European army is the only way forward now we’ve cut ties with the US. There’s loads of conspiracy theories about the European army and the UN taking over our armed forces.

Cameron never wanted us to leave, that’s why he left us in a mess once we had the vote

What would be wrong with a European army? Sounds pretty sensible in the current climate given the scale needed to counter the perceived threats. Why would the UN control our armed forces? SB

Cameron hasn't been Tory leader for a decade, and the Beatles broke up.

It is also correct that he wasn't an MP again until recently so he's not really to blame for what he's being blamed for. SB |
Again I disagree, it would have been his choice to cancel the armed forces from training 30m is basically saving a couple of quid in the grand scheme of things

I’d stick with NATO at the moment America are still the no.1 army in the world, and I’d rather be on their side then the French

A large amount more is being spent, jut not necessarily on the Army. Other sectors such as cyber defence and infrastructure hardening are equally, if not more important in the today's environment. We need technicians and computer specialists more than tanks and infantry. Plus drone and anti-drone technology. Intelligence gathering, just in case the Americans decide not to be so helpful any more. Networks and alliances, to replace NATO, if that becomes necessary. Lots of stuff to spend money on other than training of UK-based (noon-deploying) troops. As you say, £30m is a small amount, so I doubt that many excercises have been cut, in reality. Tho that won't stop the military lobby beefing about it to the press.

he's had plenty of chances to stand up for the uk against trump and musk, and failed every time. he will always side with musk and musk will always side with milei

trump's america are far more likely to support milei than the uk under any pm. they're not on our side, no matter how much you wish for it!

how expensive do you want this national review to be and what would you cut to pay for it? an ageing population and triple-locked pensions would count for a hell of a lot of it, but who's going to vote for increased immigration and cutting pensions?

Why would a European army not be part of NATO? Any reason you don't want to be on the same side as the French? The US is incredibly unreliable at the moment. SB

That's not really true though. Denmark, France, Austria, Belgium, Germany all have an overall individual tax burden larger than the UK. I do agree we can do better with the money we have but the simple fact is that the majority of people in the country want the country to live either beyond it's means or are unwilling to pay for the way they want the country to work. It’s quite disingenuous to say that we’ve cut ties with the US - rather it’s Trump’s unreliability which has made military cooperation with the EU etc much more important.
