We were always going to lose that game, and to come away with a generally respectable performance really isn’t that bad.

That's like it for me. No problem losing that, and I'll stay away from hammering any players, but saying Scherpen played well was a bit odd.
I know we have to keep it in perspective and look at positives.... but you don't have to invent positives.
Liverpool did us a favour... they took the foot of the pedal a bit and only beat us 2-0. And it's OK, but I'm not going to make that a good thing. |
I agree with this in general terms. A balanced post.
However, I will say that overall, I thought Scherpen looked solid (and more solid than Alysson) even though he was the busier of both keepers. Unfortunately though, he made a mistake for the first goal that proved to be costly. Same with Greaves. Overall I thought he played well, although his positional sense in the first 10 minutes was off, including being turned inside out by their £100 million striker for their second goal.
The midfield pairing provided little cover for the defence for the first 10/15 minutes and I thought we were in for another humping. On a positive note, that improved as the game progressed and particularly in the second half. I don't think that was down to Liverpool taking their foot off the gas, or it certainly wasn't solely because of that.
The problem is we handed them an early 2-0 lead and it's next to impossible to recover from that against a top 6 side. In fact, I can't recall our creating any clear cut chances that had Alysson really struggling. Against a top 6 side, the players have to perform well for 90 minutes and that didn't happen. But we have to remember that it's still very early days for this team Liverpool's instinctive interplay was much more slick and natural than ours (as has been the case in all 3 PL games so far) but that's understandable at this stage of the season.
The big difference between now and 2 years ago is that I'm convinced we will continue to improve. That's my cause for optimism.

Sunderland got a draw at Anfield last season. Why was so predetermined we were going to lose ? They had drawn their opening two games with a new manager.
This forum is a place for debate and discussion, critical when it is required. Nobody was doing anything in the ground but being supportive to the team. Ridiculously positive posts on here are not going to affect our chances of success this season. |
