It’s just the desperate search for positives that’s ridiculous. Obviously we’ve got some very good attacking players which is exciting but we have some stuff to work on. Saying our keeper played well or never felt as positive after a 2-0 loss after we lost the game in minutes, is just dumb. | |

I'm glad it was only 2-0 in the end, and looks a respectable result. I feared for us at 2-0.......but, Liverpool definitely took their foot off the gas and we barely troubled their shaky defence.

The 2nd half was a training match for them. They took off Isak on the hour and cruised home without us creating anything meaningful.
We are still a fresh bunch with some really promising players. My main concerns are 2 of the 4 defenders simply arent good enough and we've bought another keeper who's no meaningful improvement on Walton. |  |

Early days, so most takes will be very warm if not piping hot. Mine is: we've clearly improved going forward. Enciso is a step-improvement in #10, Fatawu at RW, and Emmerson (and Akpom) up front all better than what we had last season. LW in Maeda vs Clarke/Philogene remains to be seen. Just on tonight alone, Palacios will be better box-to-box than last season. Overall very positive.
Defensively and in goal, if anything, we've worsened. We've attempted to fix positions that weren't broken. Walton was fine in goal. If your keeper is consistently 7/10, then that's fine. I'm confident Walton can achieve that. Replacing O'Shea at RCB is another backward step. I think one of Diop or Greaves needs to be dropped. Need to either slide O'Shea into the middle with Ouattara at RB, or re-instate Kipre. I don't think Kipre ever recovered last season after nearly being decapitated at Sheffield Utd. But if he can recapture early/mid season form last year he'll be fine at this level. [Post edited 4 Sep 23:16]

Exactly this.
Of course a few posts are OTT positive, but better that as supporters than than some of the negativity I've seen on here.
Where there issues with last night? Hell yes, but it's game 3 under a new manager, with a new squad of players, in the toughest league in the world, against one of the best teams in the league. |  |

It's because we have a combination of boo boys, Johnny come lately glory hunters who expect to win every game 3-0, and fantasy football enthusiasts who treat it looks like a video game.
Hence the ridiculous 'Liverpool took their foot off the gas' comments. Something from the dark ages. That doesn't happen anymore. Top sides will murder you if they can. And we caused them problems second half.

That's like it for me. No problem losing that, and I'll stay away from hammering any players, but saying Scherpen played well was a bit odd.
I know we have to keep it in perspective and look at positives.... but you don't have to invent positives.
Liverpool did us a favour... they took the foot of the pedal a bit and only beat us 2-0. And it's OK, but I'm not going to make that a good thing. | | | |

Last night was bad. Not because we lost to Liv, or the stats were particularly adverse, but because we were almost never in the game. At Utd, we scared them, and we were the better team in the first half. "Taking your foot off the gas" exists. Top of the game or Sunday pub league. Not necessarily bc you try less, but bc you become more defensive. Making an attacking run to receive the ball weighs up less favourably vs staying in position and protecting what you have. If you do that, then you win the game. Can't be said when you're drawing.
I admitted this is early days, and my take is at least very warm. I hope I'm wrong, but I think we need to learn from two years ago, and take our goal-a-game shipping keeper out of the firing line early. Trying to play Muric into form killed us. And not because of fan criticisim, it's bc he lacked mental strength to bounce back from mistakes and deal with the criticism. If you're a top-class pro, then being psychologically strong is part and parcel. Diop & Greaves have been unconvincing, but it's the keeper position that will kill you if it's sub-standard. Can't achieve anything with a dodgy keeper. I found Scherpen's near post flap last night less worrying than the two he's shipped bc his decision-making to come off his line was poor and/or he was too slow: for Liv's second & Man Utd's lobbed goal. All keepers occasionally flap a save, but having slow acceleration (partly bc you're 6ft 9") or can't judge through-balls is a more fundamental problem. | | | |

He did play well. Take away the first 10 mins where he had a bit of a wobble, he was solid as a rock for 80 mins and pulled off some decent stops. | |

Except it's not when required, its every time something negative happens. This forum is awash with criticism based on two games against a selection of players that are without a doubt in the top 50 players globally.

Why cherry pick one of the best results Sunderland got last season? Bit pointless really. What point are you trying to make? They lost their home game against Liverpool without scoring, by the way.
They also lost 2-0 to Burnley and were eliminated by Huddersfield in the second round of the EFL cup...
They lost at Old Trafford, just as we did, except they failed to score.
They got battered by Man City, Brentford and Arsenal...
None of these results are relevant in the slightest to what we're trying to do.
